NAME: MAH MUDDIN BIN AMIN DF150036

1. A circular clarifier receives a flow rate of 3.55 MGD (Million Gallons per Day). If the diameter of
the weir is 90 ft, what is the weir loading rate in gpm/ft?

Solution :

Flow = 3,550,000 gpd

= 2465 gpm
1440 min/day

Feet of weir = 3.14 x 90 ft = 283 ft

Weir loading rate = Flow (gpm)

Weir Length (ft)

= 2465 gpm
= 8.7 gpm/ft
283 ft

2. A sedimentation basin is 60 ft long by 18 ft wide and has water to a depth of 12 ft. When the
flow through the basin is 900,000 gpd, what is the mean flow velocity in the basin in ft/min?

Solution:
900,000 gpd
= 84 cfm
1440 min/day x 7.48 gal/ft3

Q = AV

84 cfm = (18 ft x 12 ft) X x fpm

X fpm = 84 cfm
18 ft x 12 ft

= 0.4 fpm
3. A sedimentation tank has a volume of 137,000 gal. If the flow to the tank is 121,000 gph, what is
the detention time in the tank (in hours)?

Solution:

Detention time (hr) = Volume of tank (gal)

Flow rate (gph)
137,000 gal
=
121,000 gph

= 1.1 hr

4. A sedimentation basin is 60 ft long by 22 ft wide and has water to a depth of 10 ft. If the flow to
the basin is 1,500,000 gpd, what is the sedimentation basin detention time?

Solution:

(1 500 000 gpd) / (24 hr/day) = 62,500 gph

Volume of tank (gal)

Detention time (hr) =
Flow rate (gph)

60 ft x 22 ft x 10 ft x 7.48 gal/ft 3
=
62,500 gph

= 1.6 hr
