KNX IP Gateway

Product Bulletin
SIS-KNXNIXL-0E, SIS-KNXNRXL-0E
Software Release 5.2
Issued Jan 31, 2012

The KNX Bus (former European Installation Bus (EIB))

is used for Lighting Control, Control of Blinds and
Shutters as well as for Heating Control and
Attendance Systems.
The Network Integration Engines (NIEx9s) are able to
integrate the KNX protocol application layer but do not
provide the physical KNX Bus connectivity. For the
connection of NIEx9xx to a KNX bus an external KNX
gateway is required.
The KNX IP Gateway connects a KNX line via
Ethernet with an NIE.
There are 2 types of the gateway: As Interface to
connect a KNX bus to a NIE and as a Router to act an
Area or Line Coupler as well as an Interface to a NIE.
In this router mode the NIE can directly connect to the
Multi-cast IP address the routers are using.

The integration supports 2 versions of the gateway: functionality as line or area coupler. But a simply line

together. Using the KNX IP Router it is possible to
connect 2 KNX busses via Ethernet together. This
The Interface version simply connects the NIE with a makes sense when 2 KNX busses are in 2 different
KNX bus (EIB line). The gateway works like a serial or buildings and an existing Ethernet shall be used as
USB interface to the KNX/EIB. backbone. The Router supports filtering of messages
to avoid heavy traffic on the KNX busses.
The Router version has the Interface functionality
plus the ability to forward KNX messages between
different KNX busses. EIB engineers know this

This integration connects 2 worlds together. To understand the integration it is necessary to understand the
mapping between KNX Group Addresses and Metasys data points. A Group Address defines a function. For a
function you need at least 2 devices. Eg. To switch a light you need a switch and an actor. Both have the same
Group Address; the switch sends a command message for this Group Address and the actor receives it and
processes it.
