DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Structural Design development for the 22 km long
elevated part of the Light Rail Transit System II in
Kuala Lumpur city. including design development and
detailed designs for the superstructure, sub-structure
and foundations. Standard spans of various
configurations and special crossings over major

Phase-I & II
LINE 1

The Master Plan of Delhis
MRTS envisages 8 lines
covering a total length of
PH-II
245km. The plan is to be
implemented in four
phases by 2021. The first
phase, comprising 66km
length, was completed at
the end of 2005. The
second phase is presently
underway.
An important characteristic
of the project is fast track
construction utilizing as
little space as possible on
LINE 3 the road with minimal
inconvenience to traffic
and people. Aesthetics
was given the highest
consideration considering
the structure is always
going to be in the public
consciousness and for this
reason construction too
was carried out in an
environmentally friendly
manner.

DMRC LINE 1 AND LINE 3 OF PHASE- I
Standard Spans: Major Portion of Viaduct
The Elevated Viaduct of the Shahadara-Rithala Line, has typical standard spans varying between 21.6m and 29.1m determined mainly by the site
constraints at ground level for the placement of foundations and piers. All precasting was done at a centralised casting yard. The alignment is
characterized by sometimes-tight curvatures as it snakes through some of the most crowded areas of the city. It has several breaks at the location
of stations. A comparison of Line 1 and Line 3 viaducts is shown below as Artists Impression:

LINE 1: VIADUCT USING BOX GIRDER LINE 3: VIADUCT USING U-GIRDER

The change in conception from using Box Girder in Line 1 to using U-Girder in Line 3 was an improvement from the points of view of:

- reduction of noise pollution

- safety against derailment
- introduction of an evacuation walkway on the top flanges of the U-girder
- lowering of rail level
- elimination of a separate crash barrier
- considerable simplication of the formwork

As in all jobs heavily dependent on large scale precast segments, standardization of formwork was the key feature of planning. The span lengths
were fixed so that they differed always by multiples of 2.5m, which represented the length of the typical segment. A set of moulds for one span was
designed to be used for all the standard spans

3. Tri Nagar - Rithala: 8 kms

West Bank of River Yamun a to Tis

Hazari: (Project Period: Dec 1998 May 2000)
One of the most important bridge structures in the
elevated corridor is the 652.6m long Bridge across
Yamuna River, connecting the populated areas on
the east and west banks. The bridge is
incrementally launched from the east bank (pier
P14) over 12 spans of 46.2m making a continuous
length of 554.4m. The bridge has a longitudinal
gradient of 0.654% with the higher end located on
the east bank. The prestressed concrete box girder
consists of internal prestressing permanent cables
while those required for the temporary phase are
external to the concrete. One single box girder
supports two unballasted tracks for the "up" and
"down" traffic. The tractive/braking forces and also
the entire longitudinal seismic force are transferred
to the restrained pier P14. The transverse seismic
force is transferred at each pier location through
Pot Bearings.

Elevated Viaduct from Tis Hazari to
Rithala: (Project Period from Dec 1998 to Sep 2002)
(Precast Segmental & Spl. Structures)

The Elevated Viaduct of the Shahadara-Rithala Line

has typical standard spans varying between 21.6m and
29.1m determined mainly by the site constraints at
ground level for the placement of foundations and piers.
The length of segments is 2.5m except in the case of
diaphragm segments, which are 2.025m each.

All precasting was done at a centralised casting yard.

The alignment is characterized by sometimes-tight
curvatures as it snakes through some of the most
crowded areas of the city. It has several breaks at the
location of stations.
The 2 tracks (unballasted) are supported on a single
box girder section whose deck is sloped inwards to
enable controlled drainage through the pier.
The foundations are bored cast-in-situ piles constructed
by hydraulic rigs. The stratum is sand-slit or silty sand
with some areas susceptible to potential liquefaction
upto a depth of 10.0m during seismic activity.
The piers are architecturally shaped, cast in a single
pour to obtain the anticipated finish. The clear height of
5.5m in the carriageway portion of the ground level
roadway is always available.

UNDERPASSES
UNDERPASS AT ROTARY NEAR DOMESTIC AIRPORT ALONG
ROAD CONNECTING TO DWARKA

CLIENT: DELHI DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Presently there is a heavy traffic congestion at the Rotary near the Domestic Airport, Delhi, especially during the
morning and evening peak hours. It was found that majorly of the congestion was due to the large traffic volume
from Delhi & Gurgaon going to Dwarka. Hence, it was decided to make a one way underpass from
Delhi (Dhaula Kuan) & Gurgaon to Dwarka, below the existing Rotary.

A combination of Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) and Retaining Wall is being made to find an optimum of construction
time and cost and yet find a feasible construction. At certain places, underlying rock is comparatively shallow,
though still below the base slab of the underpass. A specialized construction detailing has been prepared
to tackle such locations.
