SECTION 03421

PRECAST, PRESTRESSED CONCRETE TEES

THIS SPECIFICATION SECTION RELATES TO STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS AND SHALL BE EDITED


ONLY BY THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER OF RECORD FOR THE SPECIFIC PROJECT.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

A. Provide precast, prestressed concrete tees as indicated and as specified herein.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

A. Shop Drawings: Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300:

1. Completely detailed shop drawings for all precast, prestressed concrete


tees. Indicate all dimensions, architectural details, prestressing strands,
reinforcing steel, inserts, connections, openings, edge conditions, bearing
requirements, support conditions, lifting devices and openings intended to
be field cut.

2. Mark each member for identification. Show mark on erection plan and
place legibly on unit at time of manufacture.

3. Properly completed Certificate of Design as specified under Section


01300.

4. Indicate design load and fire rating of units.

5. Drawings shall bear the signature and seal of a Professional Structural


Engineer employed by the precast manufacturer.

6. Drawings of modifications or changes in architectural features or details


which are necessitated by design requirements. Make all such
modifications without additional compensation.

7. Concrete mix design.

8. Test results of concrete mix used for production of the units.

B. Do not fabricate members before shop drawings are approved by the CM/CS.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01400 and as specified herein.

B. Fabrication and quality control to conform to M.L.-116.

C. Production practices to conform to those established by Prestressed Concrete


Institute's Plant certification program.

D. Design Responsibility:

1. Complete the Certificate of Design form in Section 01300 and submit to

CM/CS prior to manufacture of precast prestressed concrete tees.

2. Submit the following support data along with Certificate of Design:

a. Certification, signed and sealed by a Professional Structural


Engineer employed by the precast manufacturer stating that all
members, elements and connections are designed to withstand
required loads and forces.

b. Codes and specifications to which structural design conforms.

c. Do not submit calculations.

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01610 and as specified herein.

B. Coordinate the delivery, storage, handling and erection of the concrete tees.

C. Store tees on clean blocking, off the ground and protected from rain and ground
splatter. Cover tees with durable covers of canvas, heavy waterproof paper or
plastic sheeting. Secure covers firmly and protect the tees from dust, dirt or other
materials which may stain concrete.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS AND USES:

A. Cement: ASTM C 150.

B. Concrete Aggregates to conform to ASTM C 33. Size of coarse aggregate no


larger than 3/4-in. [19 mm] but not exceeding space and cover requirements of
prestressing and reinforcing steel.

C. Prestressing Strands: ASTM A 416.

D. Reinforcing Steel: ASTM A 615, Grade 60 Deformed.

E. Welded Wire Fabric: ASTM A 185.

F. Steel Plates: ASTM A 36, Hot-Dip Galvanized.

G. Concrete: Regular weight structural concrete having a nominal unit weight of 150
lb. per cubic foot [2400 kg per cubic meter]. Minimum compressive strength of
5,000 psi [35 MPa] at 28 days.

H. Metal inserts, plates and appurtenances built into concrete tees which will not be
entirely encased in concrete shall be hot-dip galvanized ferrous metal conforming
to ASTM A 123 and ASTM A 153. Aluminum shall not be embedded in
concrete.

I. Use galvanized steel T-hangers conforming to ASTM A 123 for small pipe
supports.

J. Elastomeric Bearing Pads: 100 percent virgin chloroprene (neoprene) meeting


requirements of AASHTO. Pads to conform to ASTM D 412 and to have a
minimum tensile strength of 2,500 psi [17 MPa].

K. Provide channel inserts in bottom of stems of roof members. Inserts shall be 12


gage [2.75 mm] hot-dip galvanized steel in shape of a "C" channel with integral
anchors on 4 inch [100 mm] centers. Inserts not to exceed 7/8 inch [22 mm] deep
by 1-5/8 inch [40 mm] wide. Anchors not to exceed 13/16 inch [20 mm] wide by
1-1/2 inch [38 mm] high. Total depth of inserts including anchors not to exceed
2-3/8 inch [60 mm]. Furnish inserts with waxed cardboard fillers and continuous
galvanized snap-in closure strips. Inserts shall be capable of supporting 1,500
pounds per foot [2 kN per meter] of length.

2.02 DESIGN CRITERIA:

A. Provide precast, prestressed concrete tees in accordance with ACI 318, MNL-116
and as specified herein.

B. Welding:

1. Welding of structural steel components to conform to AISC Manual and


AWS D1.1.

2. Welding of reinforcing bars, metal inserts and connections to conform to


M.L.-116 and AWS D1.4.

C. Design Loads:

1. Design tees for the dead load of the member and the superimposed dead
load of all floor, ceiling and roof components.

2. Design tees for the roof and floor live loads indicated.

3. Design tees for piping and equipment loads to be supported by the


member. As a minimum the tees shall be designed for a uniform piping
load of 15 pounds per square foot [700 N per square meter] or a
concentrated load of 2000 pounds [9 kN] located at any point along the
length of the member, whichever produces the most severe condition.

4. Design tees for loads resulting from lifting, transporting and installing.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 FABRICATION:

A. Fabricate concrete tees in accordance with M.L.-116 and Sections 03200 and
03300.

B. Cast concrete tees in smooth, rigid forms to sizes, lengths and profiles indicated
on the drawings. Properly vibrate concrete. Apply an Architectural Class B
Finish as defined by PCI to all exposed surfaces. Local surface patching to obtain
a smooth finish will be permitted only where extent of such work is minor and
where appearance is not adversely affected. Chamfer all exposed edges 3/4 inch
[19 mm]. Recess ends of all tendons a minimum of inch [13 mm] and fill
recess with a matching non-shrink, non-metallic grout.

C. Mechanically roughen upper surfaces of tees to receive concrete topping by wire


brush after screeding level.

D. Steel trowel finish the upper surfaces of tees to have roofing material applied
directly on top of the tee flange.

E. Cast all flange openings larger than 6-in. [150 mm] in greatest dimension or
having an area of more than 36 sq. in. [2.3 sq. meters] into members at time of
fabrication and properly reinforce. Smaller flange openings may be core-drilled
in the field when approved in writing by the structural Engineer who has signed
and sealed the Certificate of Design. Cast openings in stems of tees at time of
fabrication.

F. Incorporate flange welding clips, inserts, anchors and sleeves indicated on


drawings, or required, into tees at time of fabrication. Provide continuous channel
inserts in bottom of stems of concrete tees except in those portions of tees that
extend beyond exterior walls.

G. Cure tees in accordance with ML-116.

3.02 INSTALLATION:

A. Lift and support members during transportation and erection at same points where
members will be supported in completed structure.

B. Remove protruding elements of lifting devices after erection of members.

C. Protect members during lifting, transportation and handling operations against

overstress, damage to surfaces and excessive forces. Do not install cracked or
damaged tees. Only minor surface patching is permitted.

D. Erect and install tees in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions using
experienced workmen. Tees shall be accurately placed and adjusted to correct
alignment and elevation before securing in place. Locate connections and welds
in accordance with approved shop drawings. Welded connections shall be
inspected and approved before covering with concrete topping or roofing
materials.

E. Set concrete tees in correct alignment and level as indicated on drawings.

F. Field cutting or coring is not permitted without the written approval of the
Structural Engineer who has signed and sealed the Certificate of Design. Powder
driven fasteners into tees are not permitted.

G. Difference in camber between any two adjacent roof members to receive concrete
topping not to exceed -inch [13 mm] for members up to a 50 foot [15 meter]
span. Place 20 gage [1 mm] galvanized metal closures over joints between
precast members prior to placing concrete topping.

H. Difference in camber between any two adjacent roof members to receive roofing
material not to exceed -inch [13 mm] for members up to a 50 foot [15 meters]
span. Adjust roof differential camber between adjacent members in excess of 1/4-
inch [6 mm] prior to application of any roofing material. Use a cement grout
mixture of not less than one part cement to three parts fine sand. Strike grout on a
1 to 12 slope.

3.03 CONTRACT CLOSEOUT:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01700.
