Telemetry / GR
The ANTARES 0932 Digital Telemetry instrument handles the communication between the ASAP
surface system and ANTARES digital downhole instruments in both directions. It also monitors the
temperature of the telemetry electronics and the cable head voltage.
The tool includes a Gamma Ray scintillation detector, measuring the total gamma rays emitted by the
surrounding formation. The Gamma Ray Log can be run in open and cased holes, in all mud systems
and in dry holes.

Telemetry / GR

Application
The vertical resolution of the gamma ray measurement depends on the logging speed. Other para-
meters influencing the readings are washouts and mud systems, e.g. barite mud attenuates the GR
readings. On the other hand, radioactive cements can increase the gamma ray measurements in
cased holes. Commonly the tool is run in every tool string for correlation purposes. Therefore, the
main applications are:
w depth matching of different runs in open holes and cased holes
w lithology determination
w calculation of shale content
w facies and depositional environment analyses
w radio-isotope detection for tracers.

Spectrum Gamma Ray

The ANTARES 1450 Spectrum Gamma Ray (SGR) is an instrument logging the natural gamma
radiation. The tool measures the entire gamma ray spectrum from 0 to 3000 keV. It records the total
amount of gamma rays and provides quantitative measurements of the 40Potassium, 232Thorium and
238
Uranium contents of the formation. The Spectrum Gamma Ray Log can be run in open and cased
holes with all mud systems and also in dry boreholes.

Compensated Neutron
The ANTARES 1468 Compensated Neutron instrument works with an Americium Beryllium source
and two detectors. The source emits high-energy neutrons, which undergo scattering in the forma-
tion, lose energy, reach thermal energy level and become eventually captured. The thermal neutrons
are measured by the two detectors in the tool. It can be run in both open and cased holes and in most
types of mud. In order to minimize the borehole effects, the tool is run decentralized.

Compensated Neutron

Application
The neutron count rates of the two detectors are related to the amount of hydrogen in the formation.
Since most of the hydrogen atoms are present in fluids, the number of detected neutrons provide a
measurement for calculating porosity of the formation. The Neutron tool is normally run in combina-
tion with the Density tool.

Some typical applications are:

w determination of porosity
w identification of lithologies
w identification of fluids in the formation (gas/water/oil)
w identification of gas zones.

Pe Density
The ANTARES 1480 Pe Spectrum Density instrument includes a pad with a Cesium source emitting
gamma rays and two detectors. From the energy spectrum and count rates of the two detectors, the
borehole compensated formation bulk density and a photo-electric absorption index are calculated.
A caliper measurement is provided, permitting compensation for borehole effects. The pad-device
tool can be run in any mud. A density correction curve indicates the influence of the borehole rugosity
and mud cake effect.

Pe Density

Application
Due to the short distance between the short-space and long-space detectors on the pad of the tool, the vertical
resolution of the ANTARES Pe Density allows for thin bed identification across the formations. The bulk density
measurements and the photo-electric absorption index are key inputs for
w calculation of porosities
w identification of diagenetic minerals and heavy minerals
w indirect calculating of hydrocarbon density
w indication of over pressure.

In combination with the Compensated Neutron Log the Pe Density allows for:
w
identification of lithology
w
excellent indication of gas.

The Caliper Log is used to:

w log the borehole geometry especially to identify washouts and restrictions to assess the quality of density
measurements in combination with the Correction Curve (COR)
w calculate mudcake thickness (with respect to the bitsize)
w calculate the borehole volume and cement volume (with respect to the casing size).

Cross Dipole Acoustic

The ANTARES 1342 Cross Dipole Acoustic instrument (XDA) is a full-waveform monopole,

compressional, shear, and Stoneley wave evaluations. The design allows for
simultaneous acquisition of two-directional dipole measurements aligned 90 degrees
apart in the well. It works with a quadrupole, a monopole and a pair of orthogonal dipole
transmitters and an array of eight receivers, each capable for true four-component cross-
dipole acquisition. The log requires a fluid-filled borehole and is independent of the mud

Micro Resistivity Imager

Application
The ANTARES Micro Resistivity Imager together with the Orientation Sub can be run in all lithologies.
The Resistivity Image Log has a better spatial resolution than an acoustic image log and also a much
better amplitude resolution due to the difference in contrast between resistivity and acoustic
impedance ranges. The borehole data enables you to:
w determine and calculate the structural dip of a formation
w identify stratigraphic bedding and textural changes within a formation
w detect (open) fractures, fracture density and its direction.

The 6-arm caliper measurements provide diameter data of the borehole in three directions and
enable a more detailed analysis of the borehole in comparison to a 2- or even 4-arm caliper. The
measurements are used to:
w describe the shape of the borehole, in particular washouts and restrictions in 3 directions.
w calculate borehole and cement volumes (with respect to casing size)
w correct parameters for other logs, e.g. compensated neutron logs.

Orientation Sub
The ANTARES 1211 Orientation Instrument provides the input to calculate the exact position of the

a separate device. From the measurements of the three accelerometers and three magnetometers,
the (drift) azimuth, relative bearing and deviation values are calculated. The tool can be run in open
hole and cased hole (deviation and relative bearing) and is independent of the mud system.

and finally

ANTARES designs and develops leading edge technology to create advanced and reliable logging
equipment and to provide high quality API standard data. State-of-the-Art design tools such as
Altium and Solid Works are used to design ANTARES sophisticated instruments. The company
employs a team of geophysicists, programmers, mathematicians and mechanical and electronic
engineers for the development of these products.

The customer finds in ANTARES a one-stop-shop offering a comprehensive logging system of

dependable down-hole tools and easy-to-use panels and software. The down-hole tools include open-
hole and cased-hole instruments with diameters of 1 11/16 , 2 and 3 3/8 . ANTARES electrical and
hydraulic winch offerings round out the system solution.

Design and quality during manufacturing are crucial to ANTARES, consequently advanced inspection
and quality control procedures have been implemented throughout the engineering and manu-
facturing process. Every manufactured product is subjected to a multi-stage quality control and
monitoring procedure, and logging tools are only approved for shipping after they have passed a
complex final check in our own Neutron API standard test pit or test well.

ANTARES down-hole equipment is fully digital. This ensures a high data quality, reliable signal
transmission and very efficient operation.

ANTARES specially designed equipment has been used successfully in deep and hot wells (8500 m,
250C) and also at the other extreme in the Antarctica, at temperatures well below the freezing point.
