People use fruits for many things. We make juices from them. We cook bread and pie with them.
We make jams and jellies and sweets. We freeze them to eat later. We even make alcohol from fruit. Beer
comes from grains, wine comes from grapes, and some brandies are made from plums, apricots, or other
fruits.

The text is for questions

A shark is a type of fish that lives in the sea. It is one of the largest sea creatures. There are over 350 species.
A shark is shaped like a torpedo. It has rough skin like sandpaper. Instead of bones it has elastic cartilage
which helps them to move easily. It can grow up to 8 metres.

Sharks are found in all oceans around the world. The type of shark found will depend on the waters
temperature. A shark has to keep moving when it is asleep because it will either sink or suffocate. It has to
keep moving because it needs to breathe through its gills to keep alive.

When sharks are hungry, they look for food. Different sharks eat different food. Harmless sharks eat
plankton but harmful sharks eat meat.

Sharks have up to forty two babies (which are called pups) at a time. When the pups are born, they leave
straight away because the mother shark does not have teats. Some sharks have their pups in different ways,
some lay eggs while others have them alive. When they are born they need to defend themselves because
they have no one to help them. (K-6 Modules)

Asteroids are irregularly shaped rocks that orbit the Sun, mostly in
a band (asteroid belt), between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
Astronomers think that our solar system began as a cloud of gas
and dust. Gravity pulled parts of the cloud together to make the
Sun and the nine planets. They think that the asteroids formed in
that cloud but they never grew large enough to be planets.

There are thousands of

asteroids, and they come in
all sizes. The biggest asteroid
ever found is called Ceres. Ceres is more than 600 miles (1,000
kilometers) wide. Astronomers have found about 200 asteroids that
are more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) across. All the other
asteroids are much smaller. Some are only a few feet wide. Some
asteroids are round. Some asteroids are long and bumpy. Some
asteroids even have tiny moons going around them.

Astronomers wonder if once there were just a few big asteroids. The big asteroids may have crashed into
each other. The crashes would have broken them into smaller pieces, making all the asteroids we see
today.

13. What is the topic of the text?

A. Asteroids.
B. Asteroid sizes.

Bats are the only mammals that can fly. Like all mammals they feed their young ones milk. There are
about 900 types of bats, that live all over the world except in colder regions. You can often find them in
groups, called colonies. If you see one bat flying around there are probably others nearby.
Bats can grow to be big or small. The largest ones have a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters, others are only
15 cm wide. The mouth of a bat is similar to the one of a rat or fox. They have large, pointed ears and grey or
brown fur. Bats have long arms and hands with especially long fingers. These are connected to the legs with
membranes that form their wings. They have muscles in them which make it easy for a bat to fly.

Bats sleep during the daytime and come out at night in search of food. Flying around at night means
meeting fewer enemies and being able to catch more insects than during the day because they dont have to
compete with birds for food. Some bats eat insects, fruit and pollen; others are meat eaters that feed on
birds and smaller bats.

known sharks, however, are the biggest sharks. Hammerheads, tropical sharks with T-shaped heads, can be 12
feet (3.5 meters) long. Great white sharks are often more than 20 feet (6 meters) long.
A sharks body may look (27) but it is actually covered with tiny, rough scales. These scales feel like

How Do Floods Occur?

In winter there is snow on the mountains. When spring comes the sun comes out, it shines onto the snow.
The snow melts. The melting snow turns into water and flows off the mountain and enters the rivers. The
huge amount of water makes the water level rise.

If rocks and concreted areas surround rivers they can cause floods. If it rains the rain falls onto the rocks,
nothing can soak up the water. The water flows down the rocks and into the river.

When it rains for a long time the huge amount of rain cannot soak into the soil. The water forms small
streams. The streams all lead to the main river and feed it. As the water enters the river the water level
rises. If there is not a dam on the bank of the river the river will flood.

During spring while the rivers are still blocked by ice, floods occur in Siberia. The snow melts but the river
is unable to flow because of the ice. The river stops and builds up. When it gets up as high as the ice, it is
already so high that it causes a flood.

Though floods occur in most parts of the world they do not occur very often. In the past 250 years there
were 150 major floods. The most flood-prone river is the Huang He River (also called the Yellow River and
Chinas Sorrow) which is located in Northern China.
