HYDROCARBON COMPOUNDS

Laboratory Practical

22-1 MODEL BUILDING WITH ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Laboratory Manual Reference: Experiment 49
Type of Laboratory Practical: Individual

Stated Outcome
Students are asked to construct molecular models, using a ball-and-stick model set.

Materials and Preparation

Provide the following item at every station:
ball-and-stick model set
On the chalkboard write the following formulas and name:
CH4 C2H6 C4H10
C2H4 C2H2 1,2-dichloroethene
Provide a class grid assessment sheet with student names and the names of the compounds.

Laboratory Practical Procedure

1. Tell students the desired outcomes for the laboratory practical, and explain the standards for assessment.
2. Have students construct a molecular model for each compound on the chalkboard.
3. Instruct students to bring each model to your desk for assessment.

Going Further
1. Tell students to draw a structural formula for each compound.
2. Have students discuss orally or in writing the differences between the ball-and-stick models and the real
structures.

Disposal
No wastes for disposal
