Lesson Plan

Hook: Playing Gregorian monk chants as the students enter the classroom and get seated.

Introduction: We will be looking further into the architecture of medieval churches, the
Romanesque and the Gothic, applying the knowledge that we learned from yesterdays lesson
and continuing to build on it.

Engage: Romanesque or Medieval game. (PowerPoint)

Ask students to identify structures as Romanesque or Gothic. Why? What features
(using specific vocabulary from the textbook and video) to make decisions.

Explore: Vocabulary Worksheets. Use pictures and definitions in the PowerPoint to fill out the
visual vocabulary worksheet. Add to the T-chart from the previous day as necessary.

Explain & Elaborate: Give a tour of the Basilica San Miniato al Monte in Florence, Italy.
Tell students that you are going on a field trip to Florence today!
o Where is Florence? What do you know about it? What did your textbook say
about the Northern Italian states in your textbook?
Pass out the layout of the church, explain that we will be going on a virtual tour to
each of the spots marked on the map.
o Do you think the church will be Romanesque or Gothic based on the floor
plan? Why?
Pass out brochures and have students follow along in the tourengage them with
questions about specific features of the church that matched the vocabulary given.

Evaluate: Have students fill out a postcard to their parent from Florence. Summary and
describeWhat did you see at San Miniato al Monte today?

Introduce group projectmaking a tour of your own church. Students must do Part I
(selecting a church from the list of preapproved virtual medieval churches) and Part 2,
finding a floor plan of the church, in class or as homework.
