3. Derive the formula for finding the bore diameter using two different balls of diameter
d1,d2 in 2 ball method.

H = height of the slip gauges in mm.

Description
Various methods are used to determine the diameter of the bore. Indirect method
of measurement is one of the method to measure the bore diameter. The balls of known
diameters d1 and d2 are kept one over the other in bore as shown in fig. The value of the
sum of d1 and d2 should be greater than the diameter of the bore.

Procedure
1. The experimental arrangements are shown in fig. The steel balls of various
diameters are kept one over the other in the bore.
2. The height of the peak point of the upper ball from the surface plate is
measured with the help of dial indicators and slip gauges.
 3. The slip gauges of approximate ball height are wrung and set up aside
specimen. The slip gauges are added or removed on the pile based on
difference in dial indicator reading when its plunger touches the slip gauge and
peak of ball height.
4. When the dial gauge shows the same defection if the plunger touches the slip
gauge and peak of ball height, that value of slip gauges is taken as height of
balls in the bore.
5. By substituting the values of height and diameter of the balls, bore diameter is
computed.
