Final - Lessons Learned

Lesson Plan

Developmental Skill Self Help/Adaptive/Independent Skills (Hand Washing)

Age Group Preschool Disability Vision Impairment

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is for the children to fight against germs and to reduce the
germs from spreading in the classroom.

Outcome: At the end of this lesson the children will be able to tell and show step by step ways
to wash their hands on their own.

Setting: This lesson is going to be taught in the classroom at morning circle time.

Materials: Flash Cards- there will be 6 flash cards to show the steps of hand washing
Sink-where the children will wash their hands
Soap- what the children will use on their hands to get them clean
Paper towels- what the children will use to dry their hands
Trash can- where the children will throw away the used paper towel
6 Step coloring sheet- children will color this page while waiting to wash their
hands
Crayons- to use for coloring

Accommodations: The accommodations for the vision impairment will be big flash cards the
size of a normal piece of construction paper. The flashcards will have black letters on them
making it easier for everyone to see. Brittany will be placed in the front row of carpet so she is
able to see well. Along with showing the children the flashcards they will be passing them on
by one around the carpet so everyone is able to hold the flash cards 1-6.

Lesson:
* Ask the children if they know what germs are
* Explain what germs are and why we don't want them in our classroom
* Ask the children what are some ways we could stop the spreading of germs in our classroom
* Explain the very first thing we are going to do when we walk into this classroom is wash our
hand to help reduce the amount of germs, do any of you know how to wash your hands?
* Let the children answer
* Do any of you know how many steps there are to washing your hands?
* There are 6 steps to hand washing
* Show the flash cards to the children
* Flash card one is Step 1. Wet Hands
Step 2. Use soap
Step 3. Lather & rub (create bubbles on your hands)
Step 4. Rinse
Step 5. Dry your hands with a towel
Step 6. Turn off the sink with the paper towel and throw the paper towel
in the trash
* Have the children copy what your hands are doing, go through the steps and pretend to
wash your hands so they can get used to what they will do when they are in front of the sink
* Have six children go to the front of the class and give them a step to do, they will show to the
class what they are to do for the step they received
* Swap out the children and repeat until everyone was able to go in the front of the class
* Explain one more time to the children that this is going to be the very first thing they do
when they enter this classroom
* One by one have the children go to the sink and wash their hands
* This is where I would be documenting to see if they know the steps and can wash their hands
on their own
* While the children are going one by one, everyone else will be coloring the 6 steps to hand
washing coloring page

Assessment: To assess this lesson I will have a checklist to see when the children do wash their
hands if they were able to do all six steps. I will also be documenting through pictures and
small videos of the children showing they are capable of wash their hands on their own.
