Teacher Candidate: Brooklynn Dendinger Date: November 26, 2017

Grade and Topic: Grade 5 Life Science Length of Lesson: 1 hour for two days

Mentor Teacher: Marla Philips School: University of Memphis-IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on plant and animal cells. The overall objective is for the student to
be able to identify the parts within a plant cell. As stated in the TN state life science standard.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a handout of a plant cell, students should be able to identify the parts of the cell with 100%
accuracy.
Given a computer with access to the internet, students will create a PowerPoint demonstrating their
knowledge over the plant cell with 100% accuracy.
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the functions and parts of a
plant cell. Students will be able to create a PowerPoint demonstrating their part of the plant cell as
assigned.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State/District and/or Common Core standards
SPI 0507.1.1 Identify the major parts of plant and animal cells such as, the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, and
cytoplasm.
GLE 0507.1.1 Distinguish between the basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells.
ISTE Standard(s)
3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and
media

MATERIALS:
1. Plant Cell handout
2. Computer
3. PowerPoint
4. Internet Access to:
a. Interactive Learning Website: http://www.e-learningforkids.org/science/lesson/plant-cell/
b. Google Images: https://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&authuser=0
Technology Integration: Students will use the websites listed above to obtain for information on the
parts of the plant cell. PowerPoint will be used to create a presentation over the assigned part of the cell.
Students, upon completing the activity, will save their work to a shared Dropbox folder for their class. A
sample of the product is available here:
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the parts within a plant cell, as well as their functions.
This lesson is a continuation of TN grade five sciences standard 1.0.
We will discuss the parts within a plant cell then compare and contrast to them in an animal cell.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: Students will watch videos over the parts of a plant cell and their functions. After
understanding the parts and their functions, they will be given a handout with a picture of a plant cell,
where students will fill in the blank with the correct corresponding words that point towards the section
of the plant cell.
Prior to the Computer: 5 minutes
Teacher
1. After the introduction, assign students into groups of four.
2. Give student their assigned part of the plant cell.
At the Computer: 55 minutes
Teacher
1. Have students open the Internet Browser as well as PowerPoint.
2. Direct students to the interactive learning website.
3. Direct students to google images website.
4. Monitor and assist as needed.
Student
1. Open up PowerPoint and the Internet browser
2. Go to the interactive learning websites, and as a group play the game.
3. Using PowerPoint creates an introduction slide with: Names, title of your part, and due date.
4. Create four more slides discussing: what the part looks like, its function, what it is, and an
interesting fact that the group learned.
5. Insert pictures into slides from google images to add creativity.
After the Computer: 1 hour
Teacher
1. Have students demonstrate their PowerPoint in less than ten minutes.
2. Have students discuss as a class about what they learned.
Student
1. As a group students will demonstrate their PowerPoint in less than ten minutes.
2. Students will discuss what they learned about the plant cell.
Closure: Students will write a one page reflection paper over the assignment, which will give the
teacher feedback.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Provide the formative and /or summative assessments that are part of this lesson.
Make sure there is a clear link between the Goals and Objectives and the Assessments.
