The Mission To accomplish the vision, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences - a Christian Minority Institution will be committed to transform lives through the following objectives + To raise undergraduate and post graduate students and research scholars to serve humanity by attaining high levels of academic excellence, professional competence, exemplary values and spiritual empowerment + To find solutions to human problems in areas relating to Water, Food, Health Care and Energy through scientific, social and technological research as well as policy formulation. + To set up care homes for physically and mentally challenged as well as the elderly and the terminally ill to enable the students to understand the human needs and pain, by participating in the services rendered to them on campus and thus to dedicate themselves to work towards solving those problems through research, development, policy making at high levels or through providing spiritual care 6.1.2 Does the mission statement define the institutions’ distinctive characteristics in terms of addressing the needs of society, the students it seeks to serve, the institutions’ tradition and value orientation, its vision for the future ete.,? Yes, the mission statement clearly defines the distinctive characteristics of the Institution by reflecting the interest areas such as Food, Water, Health Care and Energy through teaching, research and extension activities. The mission enables every individual to identify and solve problems of humanity by empowering the students and staff. The vision of the institution is fulfilled by addressing the need of both intemal and extemal stake holders, 6.1.3 How is the leadership involved (a) In ensuring the organizations management system development, implementation and continuous improvement? ‘* A well structured organization with demarcated hierarchical levels for smooth functioning and implementation exists as shown in figure 6.1. The Vice Chancellor provides academic and administrative leadership to the entire system. Student representatives collectively represent their concerns through the class committee meeting to the HoD, which is further escalated to the Directors and issues are discussed at the University Academic and Administration Co-ordination Committee (UAACC). Campus Management System (MyKarunya) is used for managing the entire academic profile of the institution and it is made available to the stakeholders as well. Periodic feedbacks are also solicited through a student journal “Impressions” which is published once in ‘two months to know the opinion of students in gross level on major decisions taken for the welfare of the community. © Parents: Seven parents meeting were conducted at various locations in India to interact and understand their expectations during the assessment period. ‘+ Alumni: Nine alumni interactions have been organized during the assessment period through Karunya Intemational Alumni Association, USA (KIAA) and Karunya Alumni Association, India (KAAT) which had played an important role at KITS for receiving continuous feedback for improvement. ‘+ Faculty members: Approximately 800 Staff meetings have been conducted at the department, school and university level on a regular basis, through which the members express their suggestions and feedback for the development of the institution, Karunya Institute of Technology and S 186 NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC) SELF STUDY REPORT * Corporate meetings: 170 meetings were organized by Center for Placement and Training to update with the trends in the industry and decode industry expectations, The leaders of KITS also interact with the media through press meets during mega events of the institution, Interactions with higher education officials of the goverment, UGC, MHRD are also done on need basis, concerning the welfare and development of the University. If yes, indicate the levels of participative management. Yes, KITS promotes the culture of participatory management. To fulfil this, KITS follows a structured format for involving staff and students at various levels right from class room to the board room. Not applicable 6.1.9 How does the University groom leadership at various levels? Give details. Over 160 faculty members are in academic decision making bodies. More than 100 faculty members are involved in hostel administration. More than 300 faculty members are involved in decision making that includes major campus activities like south India level sports tournaments, national level techno-management meet and campus life. Faculty members are empowered to be leaders at various levels by taking up responsibilities both at the Academic and Administrative arena for independent decision making. Some of the leadership roles are listed below: 1. Faculty members are represented in apex bodies of KITS, including Board of Management 2. As mentor to the students 3. Contributing to National Development + Ms.Malarkodi Rangasamy, a student from Evangeline Matriculation School obtained her B.Tech, and M.Tech degrees from KITS and qualified for Indian Revenue Service (ARS), presently posted as IRS officer with the Government of India at Nagpur. * So far KITS has successfully groomed 11 of our students to serve the Indian Defense Service. ‘+ KITS was awarded the ‘best blood bank donor’ in the year 2014 by donating over 700 units. ‘* Rs.15 lakhs was generated and contributed by the staff and students of KITS towards Chennai Flood Relief. * 3000 students were involved in Swachh Bharath initiative, cleaning up the streets and villages in and around Coimbatore. © 1500 students were involved in HIV & AIDS awareness campaigns in collaboration with Coimbatore City Corporation. ‘* Supporting socially downtrodden children to pursue their education till class 12 and to enroll them into B.Tech program at KITS. By this scheme we have supported 7 children during the assessment period. ‘+ Active participation by students through NSS, NCC, YRC, Ys’ youth club, Leadership club grooms the young students for nation building. * Students are also encouraged to showcase their abilities in national level technical and business plan contests that brings out solutions to human problems. ‘* Model United Nations (MUN) is organized by KITS to pave way for debating global challenges and bringing forth probable solutions ‘+ Participation in Student Parliament at the national level organized by the Indian Institute of Public Administration. Inculeating a sound value system among students Anti Raging Committee, Sexual Harassment Prevention Cell, Grievance Redressal Cell, etc, facilitate instilling discipline and code of conduct. «KITS has zero tolerance for consumption of narcotics and alcohol and the students are appraised of the consequences periodically. ‘+ The Directorate of Value Education (DoVE) offers a comprehensive course (2 credit course) which is mandatory for all UG and PG students. More than 6000 students have benefitted during the assessment period, «KITS js built on Values and Ethics which is carefully inculcated into every student through programs like awareness on human rights, anti-corruption, health hazards of smoking, alcohol consumption, caring for the poor and the elderly. ‘* DoVE organizes “Make a Difference” (MAD) programme to sensitize students on energy conservation, health, water preservation using flash-mob programmes. If yes, what aspects are considered in the development of policies and strategies? Yes. The University has a perspective plan for development, a. Vision and Mission: Every School / Department has a five year plan with SMART targets (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound) which comprises of short term and long term goals. These plans are chalked out through brain storming sessions which happen during regular faculty meetings. The implementation is done at the school level with Director / HoD steering the process. The outcome is consolidated and is presented to the top administration and reviewed periodically. The five year plan for every School / Dept is structured around the following aspects: Vision and mission for the school / dept ‘Teaching and learning strategies Research & consultancy plans Industry interaction & collaborations Global reach and Intemationalization Corporate Social Responsibility and Extension activities Human resource planning and development The projections laid out by the schools are reviewed by the Planning and Monitoring board and the recommendations are taken forward for approval and implementation by the Board of Management. b. Teaching and Learning: Department-wise target review meetings are convened once in 6 months to as the progress made by the faculty members and the department. Academic progress is monitored and rectified by the Academic Council which meets twice a year. c. Research and Consultancy: School Research / Review Committees monitor monthly progress on the research front and academic progress. Board of Research Committee (BRC) monitors research progress and enforce compliance by the research scholars. University has set policy to maximize consultancy, staff and faculty members are proportionally rewarded financially. Industry Interaction: University has adopted a stringent approach to identify at-least one industry with every department to initiate industry related research. In this connection, most of the departments have a collaborative research establishment in house to pursue industry oriented research. How is it designed, driven, deployed and reviewed? Yes. The University has a formal policy to ensure quality in teaching-leamning, academic research and extension. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for every domain activity has been formulated and implemented in order to ensure consistency in varied functions of the University. KITS has implemented Quality Management System on par with ISO 9001:2008 standards to improve the quality of academic and administrative practices for higher productivity. Academic audits, Research audits and department level audits are co-ordinated by IQAC to benchmark. ‘The quality assurance mechanism is anchored by a host of faculty members represented from each of the 19 departments. Yes. KITS introduced the best practice of Decentralization in the year 2013 after which academic heads have taken full responsibility in policy formulation, financial planning, quality assurance, industry interaction and placement initiatives. The University encourages academic departments to function independently by giving powers and authority to its Directors. This practice of decentralization has yielded enhanced results and increased employee involvement at the University. Outcomes: Pronounced change in introducing thematic research areas, new industry partnership, increased in-plant training activities, focused Core Company placements, visible inter-departmental research collaborations, upsurge in research projects to 56, increased consultancy assignments to a tune of 3.27 crores, mega classes were introduced to enhanced teaching-leaming experience, product development labs established with industrial collaboration, spontaneous international tie-ups are some of the salient features of decentralization. Following the directions of UGC, AICTE, and as per Article XXV of the constitution’ MOA. of KITS, the Grievances Redressal Cell is established in order to deal with the individual grievances related to students, employees and other stakeholders and ensure the redressal of varied grievances amicably in a time bound format. ‘The Grievance Redressal Cell at KITS is an easy and readily accessible forum for prompt disposal of day-to-day grievances, through a fair, impartial and consistent mechanism to promote a responsive and accountable attitude and cordial relationships among all stakeholders, thereby maintaining a harmonious atmosphere in the University Campus. Any aggrieved student/employee of the University with a grievance complaint may approach the Grievance Redressal Cell to lodge/file their grievance in writing or send on- line through e-mail “tellus@karunya.edu”. They are provided with proper advocacy to express their grievances freely and frankly, without any fear of being victimized. On receipt of a grievance, the office of the grievance cell immediately forwards the grievance to the respective officer in-charge dealing with substantive function, The grievances are addressed in a time bound manner and the action taken report is generated. Wherever needed, subcommittee is constituted by the Vice Chancellor to address the issue on top priority.
