Grade 6 Topic Behavioral Adaptations

1. Rationale:Whyisthislessonrelevantatthistimewiththesestudents?

This lesson will continue to solidify the concept of animal adaptations, and will expand on the concept
of behavioral adaptations. It will also encourage students to look at their own adaptations and determine
whether they are structural or behavioral.

5. Lesson Development Pacing


Introduction:Howwillyouintroducethislessoninamannerthat

We will have a refresher of the vocabulary and I will put up the document on the 15 mins
overhead saying why animals have adaptations. Students will have to keep their copy
handy while watching the movies.

After each one, I will give students two minutes to share their findings with the
group and will tell each group to be ready to share with the class. In the
resulting discussion we will determine whether adaptations are structural or
behavioral.

Note: while structural adaptations take generations to manifest and become


prevalent, behavioral ones can be adopted quite quickly within a generation.

I will tell students that humans have adaptations too, and its important to
figure out whether they are behavioral or structural.

We will discuss the ways humans are different from other animals (adapt
environment to suit them). 15 minutes

Ask students to think about their own bodies and behaviours. What can they
identify that helps them in the way that adaptations do? For this part, I will
have the purpose of adaptations on the overhead for them to refer to. I will ask
students to do this individually so that I can collect sheets for formative
assessment.

Students will be able to work with an organizer here so that they know to
address what the adaptation is and why they have it.
They may have more time for this later if needed.
