Corona caused deterioration of fiber-optic cable jackets installed on high voltage transmission lines. Field observations and lab tests showed corona could exist on the tips of armor rods protecting the cables. Electric field analysis found high enough surface gradients at the rod tips to produce corona. Tests in a high voltage chamber duplicated field conditions and caused jacket damage near generated corona. The mechanism of deterioration was identified and jacket life expectancy estimated. Different techniques for mitigating the issue were suggested.

Abstrcxct Deterioration of ADSS (All Dielectric Self-
Supprting) fiber optic cable jacket material has been reported near the tips of annor r d assemblies installed on high mltage transmission lines. FieId observations and laboratory ?estsrevealed that coront?can exist on the tips of the armor rod. Electric field analysis rcported herein rem!s that the tip surface gadients are high enough to produce corona. Field conditions have been duplicated in a high voltage test chamber and jacket damage has been observed near generated corona. The deterioration mechanism is identified and jacket life expectancy is estimated. Different mitigation techniques are suggested.
