Learning Objective USI.4 The student will demonstrate knowledge of European exploration in
North America and West Africa by
a) describing the motivations for, obstacles to, and
accomplishments of the Spanish, French, Portuguese, and
onente

English explorations.

Activity In class following the lesson, the students will create a comic strip that will
require the students to:
1. Pick a listed European country (England, France, Spain, Portugal) and
research the countrys explorer learned about in the lesson.
2. Next the students will research the motivations for the explorer to sail
to North America or West Africa.
3. After, the students will research the obstacles faced during the
explorations.
4. Finally, they will research the accomplishments made by the explorers
for the chosen country.
5. With all of the gathered information, the students will create a comic
strip that includes their research on the explorers telling their
Pedagogy

motivations, obstacles, and accomplishments.


6. The students will make a separate strip for each piece of information.
7. There must be at least five strips that include: (a) explaining who the
explorer is, (b) who they sailed for and where they sailed to, (c) their
motivation, (d) their obstacles, and (e) their accomplishments

The teacher will be looking for the students ability to match the explorer with
the country sailed from and sailed to. The teacher will also be looking for the
students ability to separate the motivations, obstacles, and accomplishments.

The visual representation will be a fun way for the students to use their
research while also showing their creativity.

Technology The students will use pixton.com for this assignment. A free website that

students can use to create their own custom comic strips.
