Location:

The Guatapur River is a river in the Cesar department, on the Atlantic Coast of Colombia. It begins
in the Laguna Curigua, in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, at 4400 meters above sea level and it
ends at the Cesar River, near to Valledupar.

Origin:

There are many legends around the mermaid and one of them speaks about a beautiful girl from
the neighborhood of Caaguate in Valledupar who, after her parents forbade her to bathe in the
river on a Holy Thursday, she hastened to disobey.

History:

The girl left her house without the permission of her parents and, after contemplating the cold
waters of the river, decided to strip naked near a deep well. There, weary by the heat of the
afternoon, the girl threw herself from the high rocks.

The happiness caused by the bath was immense, but suddenly, the waters were disturbed, the sky
darkened, the clouds thundered and a rebellious wind woke up, sweeping from side to side the
banks of the river.

The girl tried to get out of the water but could not escape and she lost control over her body had
become numb. When she reached the shore she learned the truth. His legs had become a huge tail
of fish.

Description:

Gilt and erect over a throne, the mermaid glows. Its tail looks towards the sky. His face remains
fixed forward. It dominates the Guatapur River and fascinates the visitor who watches it from the
bridge.
