Both domestic and foreign travelers
head to the Dominican Republic for
board-certified plastic surgery with a

done in Colombia. Whether it's a buttocks
or breast augmentation, a breast lift
or reduction, or even a tummy tuck or

Guatemala, where an overnight stay
at a state-of-the-art hospital may run you
about $75, has become another hot spot
for cost effective medical travel. Travelers
come here not only for plastic surgery, but
also for medical procedures ranging from
diagnostic scans, full body exams and
general surgery, to general and orthopedic
surgery. Cardiovascular patients can get
everything from a simple angiogram to
angioplasty, cardiac catheterization and
even open-heart surgery, all performed by
highly skilled physicians. Dental surgery,
dermatology, ophthalmology and physical
therapy, among several others, are also
available. Cosmetic procedures include
breast lifts, dermabrasion, facelifts,
liposuction and tummy tucks. Cancer
patients also travel here for cost-effective
oncology care.
A few things to consider before
you schedule that surgery. First,
check with the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
(jointcommissioninternational.org ) to ensure
your doctor is board certified or meets
similar standards in the country where the
procedure will be performed. Try to choose
a physician who also belongs to ASPS
Member Surgeons, since they only operate
in accredited facilities. You can search for

IRS.gov, to see if your surgery costs are tax
deductible.

in mind while researching a country for
your procedure. Inquire about a pre-travel
medical evaluation and detailed instructions
about visiting the specific country. You
should know where you'll be staying — at
a medical facility or a hotel, and whether
you'll need someone to travel with you to procedure during your consultation, and
