Reason for using a CAD system

To increase the productivity of the designer.

To improve the quality of the design.

To improve design documentation.

To create a manufacturing data base.

13

Computer Aided Manufacturing

Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) is defined as the
effective use of computer technology in manufacturing
planning and control.

Manufacturing Planning Manufacturing Control

Timeline / History of CAD

The method of representing 3D solid objects through orthographic
projection was formulized by French mathematician Gaspard Monge
(1746-1818).

Interactive Computer Graphics (ICG) was developed during 1960s.

By the late 1960s the term Computer Aided design (CAD) was
coined.

During 1970s, graphics standard GKS, PHIGS and IGES were

introduced to facilitate data exchange.

By 1980s and 1990s, CAD/CAM had penetrated virtually every

industry including aerospace, automotive, construction, consumer
etc.

Acquiring a CAD/CAM System

The selection of the CAD/CAM system is greatly
influenced by the size and complexity of the product of
the company.

o Automobile industry will search for a system which can

solve complex problems of sheet metal and die/mold design.

o A shoe making company will look for a system which is

good in surface modeling

o The manufacturer of parts on CNC will be interested in a

good CAM system.
