LEARNING SEQUENCE AND LESSON GOALS
DURATION: 60 MINUTES

Lesson focus: Volleyball Dig and Setting Shots

Learning intention: To learn the correct technique of a dig and set shots in Volleyball and articulate when I should use each shot.

Success Criteria:
I can explain the key teaching -points for the technique of both the dig and set shots.
I can explain when I should use each of these shots in a game.
I can successfully use the correct technique for each shot.

1. Warm up (10 minutes): Tail tag- each student to receive a braid to tuck into the back of their shorts. On the whistle student attempt to steal the
tag from other students. Once they steal a tag, the tag is tucked into their shorts. Continue for 90 seconds. At the end of time have students count
the number of tags they have. The person with the most tags win. Repeat twice.

Modifications: change the size of the boundaries e.g full court, half court, 1/3 court.

2. Demonstration of dig (5 minutes): Key teaching points- place both hands together, bend your knees, use your forearms to hit the ball, hit the
ball high in the air.

3. Slice the cake drill (10 minutes)

Students divide into 5 groups. In small circles, one student stands in the middle and softly tosses the volleyball to a person standing in the circle and
they practice digging the ball back. Students take turns being the person in the middle.

4. Demonstration of the set shot (5 minutes): Knees bent, ball taken above forehead, push through (legs and arms)

5. Repeat slice the cake drill using the Setting shot (10 minutes)

6. Keep the ball of the ground drill (10 minutes): In the same small groups as the previous drill have students attempt to keep the ball of the
ground using the 2 shots practiced earlier. No student is to touch the ball twice in a row. Have students count how many times they are
successful before the ball hits the ground. Attempt to beat the previous score.

Conclusion (5 minutes):
What was the key teaching points for the dig?
When do you think you would use a dig shot in a game? Why do you think that?
What was the key teaching points for the setting shot?
When do you think you would use the dig shot in a game?
What was the most challenging aspect when trying to keep the ball off the ground (moving your feet to get into position, controlling accuracy etc)

Resources:
Dig and set shot video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0beAUyQeH8

DURATION: 50 MINUTES
Lesson Focus: Digging, setting and keeping the ball off the ground (moving feet)

Learning intention: To continue focusing on improving the dig and setting shot technique.
To practice 3 touches on either side of the net

Success Criteria:
I can explain the key teaching -points for the technique of both the dig and set shots.
I can explain when I should use each of these shots in a game
I can successfully use the correct technique for each shot
I can work with my team to make 3 successful touches on our side of the court

Warm up (15 minutes): Students break up into 5 groups and practice slice the cake drill for both dig and set shots (10 minutes), students then practice
using both shots to keep the ball off the ground (5 minutes).

Big Ball Volleyball (20 minutes): Divide class into 2 teams, explain to students that they will be using a big ball and as a team they must use 3 touches
before the ball goes over the net. Explain the volleyball court boundaries and the score system (first to 25 points will win the set, you will win points if
the ball lands in the oppositions court, if the opposition hit the ball out on the full, the opposition do not touch the ball 3 times before the ball goes over
the net, if the opposition hit the ball into the net, opposition touches the net or foot goes over the mid court boundary).

Conclusion:
Who thought their dig and set shots improved this lesson? How do you know they improved?
How can your team win points in volleyball?
What did you need to do to ensure that your team got 3 touches on each side of the net (communication, move to the ball etc)
How can the scoring system and rules be modified to be more inclusive of all students?

DURATION: 50 MINUTES
Lesson Focus: underarm and volleyball serve

Learning intention: To learn the correct technique of both the overarm serve and underarm serve

Success Criteria:
I can explain the key teaching points for the underarm volleyball serve
I can explain the key teaching points for the overarm volleyball serve
I can successfully serve the ball over the net from the back of the court using the underarm serve
I can successfully serve the ball over the net from the back of the court using the overarm serve

Warm up (5 minutes): divide students into 6 groups and allocate them half of a court across the 3 courts set up in the gym. Have all students stand on
the back line, have students follow the leader side stepping to the right around the boundary of their half of the court. After 30 seconds switch directions
and repeat for a further 30 seconds. Students then stand at the back of the court. On teachers whistle students run forward to the net jump up pretending
to a block shot and the run backwards to the line. Repeat x 6.

Keep the ball off the ground (5 minutes): In the same groups from warm up each group receives a ball. Using the digging and set shots keep the ball
off the ground. No person to touch the ball twice in a row. Count how many times you are successful before the ball hits the ground. Try and beat your
previous score.

Demonstration of underarm serve Key teaching points- stand in a neutral side on position at the back of the court, rest the ball in your non- dominate
hand, Hit the ball like a hand ball in AFL, follow through.

Underarm serve Practice (10 minutes) Students combine with the group on the other side of their court and practice serving underarm back and forth
over the net- encourage students to practice their digging off the serve.

Demonstration of overarm serve Key teaching points- stand in neutral side on position, place ball in non-dominate hand, throw the ball high and
straight in the air, using your wrist, swing your hand over your shoulder and hit the ball as it starts to come down.

Practice overarm serve (15 minutes) Students combine with the group on the other side of their court and practice serving overarm back and forth
over the net- encourage students to practice their digging off the serve. Encourage students now to try and add the setting shot off the dig.

Conclusion
Who thought their underarm and overarm serve improved this lesson? How do you know they improved?
When would you use the underarm or overarm serve in a game?
What did you need to do to ensure that your team got 3 touches on each side of the net (communication, move to the ball etc)
How can the scoring system and rules be modified to be more inclusive of all students?

Warm up:
Students divide into small groups and practice keeping the ball of the ground. Whilst this is happening set up 3 volleyball courts.
