Introduced in 1997, S&Cs IntelliTEAM Automatic
Restoration System was the first product of its kind.
Using peer-to-peer communication with distributed
intelligence, IntelliTEAM tracks system conditions
and quickly initiates service restoration. IntelliTEAM
was way ahead of its time.
In 2003, S&C expanded IntelliTEAM capabilities
with IntelliTEAM II... an order of magnitude more unmatched interoperability. It can automate new as
powerful than the original. IntelliTEAMII is fully
scalable. It supports complex systems of virtually
any size and accommodates tie points from multiple
sources. It can handle as many teams of switches as
line loading will allow. And with IntelliTEAMII, each
team can have up to eight controls. Switches can
be arranged in radial circuits, looped circuits, or a
combination of both.
Now, S&C has advanced IntelliTEAM technology
even further. Its been redesigned to be even more
robust and easier to use. IntelliTEAMSG offers such
important features as:
IntelliTEAMSG Designer. Simplifies system
configuration. Propagates settings to all team
members.
Rapid Self-Healing. Isolates faulted section and
restores service to non-faulted sections in seconds.
Communication Enhanced Coordination.
Improves feeder segmentation and reduces
momentary interruptions. In a system in which
IntelliRupters share the same protection curve,
only the IntelliRupter closest to a fault will open.
Post-Restoration Load Management. Protects
reconfigured system from loading exceeding the
capabilities of the system.
Closed-Loop Operation. Eliminates the need for
a normally open switching point in applications
in which the loop is served from two substations.
Permits any number of two-sub sections to
be configured in a complex network. Ideal for
subtransmission applications.
Site Automation Testing. Lets you emulate events
using actual site parameters and peer-to-peer
communication andoptionally
operate switches.
New Normal. Lets you accept the present
circuit configuration as the permanent
normal configuration.
In-Field Instant Replay. Aids in the analysis of
events. IntelliTEAM Designer collects event logs

from affected devices and compiles them in a
single record. You can play back the results on
the single-line diagram that was used to configure
IntelliTEAM SG.

S&C products including IntelliRupter PulseClosers,
Scada-Mate and Scada-Mate CX Switches,
Remote Supervisory PMH and PME Pad-Mounted
Gear, and Remote Supervisory Vista Underground
Distribution Switchgear.

IntelliTEAMSG works with a wide array of new
and existing DNP 3.0-compatible intelligent elect-
ronic devices from other manufacturers, including
Cooper, Nu-Lec, SEL, and ABB protection relays and
recloser controls.
Improves service reliability
IntelliTEAMSG improves service reliability for
critical areas of your distribution system, and can be
expanded to serve entire regions of your system. It
requires no central monitoring or SCADA control...
though SCADA is fully supported.
With IntelliTEAMSG, restoration proceeds without
the delays inherent in a dispatcher-operated or
centrally controlled system. IntelliTEAMSG monitors
real-time current and voltage throughout the system
and uses this information to make smart switching
decisions. It acts locally before breakers or reclosers
lock out.
Unlike time-coordinated restoration systems
that must be carefully pre-programmed,
IntelliTEAMSGs sophisticated operating logic can
automatically restore service under multiple event
contingencies. During storms or major outages, it
quickly returns service to as many customers as
possible, freeing utility personnel to deal with system
repairs. IntelliTEAMSG minimizes Customer Minutes
of Interruption, improving your reliability ratings.

IntelliTEAMSG provides out-of-the-box automatic
restoration functions. No custom programming or
special communication infrastructure is required.
IntelliTEAMSG is the easiest, most cost-effective way
to improve service reliability.
Maximizes the efficiency of your system
Restoration capacity is based on real-time loading and
actual feeder capacity, not often-outdated historical
loading data. Your circuits can be routinely loaded
higher... IntelliTEAMSG prevents overloading
during restoration. The excess capacity of adjacent
sources is used to restore service to unfaulted
segments, helping defer the need for system upgrades
and allowing you to tie circuits that traditional
planning criteria wouldnt permit.
Any RTU or SCADA device using DNP 3.0 can
be employed to monitor feeder loading at the
breaker, and continuously transmit this value to the
first IntelliTEAMSG-equipped switch outside the
substation. This real-time feeder loading value is
subtracted from the total feeder capacity to determine
the reserve capacity. If the breaker is equipped with
a DNP 3.0-compatible IED, it can be readily
integrated into IntelliTEAMSG, further enhancing
system functionality.

IntelliTEAMSG gives you the flexibility to select
restoration strategies. Youre assured that system
planning criteria are observed and that critical users
get the highest priority.
Compatible with existing systems
IntelliTEAMSG-equipped controls utilize DNP 3.0
protocol and peer-to-peer communication via radio
or fiber-optics. No substation automation, SCADA, or
communication infrastructure is required but is easily
integrated with IntelliTEAMSG .
When the dead-banding feature of IntelliTEAMSG
is used, communication traffic on your SCADA system
will be significantly reduced. Analog parameters such
as voltage, current, and kVARs are reported only when
measurements exceed user-defined values. You can
select either a percentage-based or a fixed dead-band
value for each analog parameter.
IntelliTEAM SG
operating principles are simple
Each teams mission is to maintain power
on its line segment, using the normal power
source if possible.
Each team communicates with neighboring
teams through controls they share in common.
The excess capacity of a neighboring team is a
possible restoration source thats available at the
shared switch.
If the normal source power is lost, the team
evaluates the excess capacity of all alternate
sources and transfers the load to the first
available source with sufficient capacity. The
alternate source can be more than one team away;
inter-team data exchange ensures sharing of
excess capacity and coordination of all restoration
decisions. If desired, you can prioritize the order in
which alternate sources are specified.
Protect the reconfigured system from
overloading. After the system has been
reconfigured, overloading can potentially occur.
If desired, post-restoration load shedding and
reconfiguration can be utilized to protect the
system from overloadingshifting or dropping load
based on prioritization rules youve set.
When normal power has been restored or the
fault has been corrected, the system returns
to its normal configuration, either manually,
automatically, or via SCADA control.
If another event takes place after the team has
transferred to an alternate source, the team will
seek another alternate source to keep its line
segment energized. The ability to respond to multiple
contingencies makes IntelliTEAMSG a much
more effective tool than other systems. Each team
maintains excess-capacity statistics on adjacent teams
that it can use to dynamically prioritize the
restoration strategy.

With IntelliTEAMSG, youre in complete control of
the automated restoration process.
IntelliTEAMSG can be set to limit the number
of segments involved in the restoration process.
And the process is automatically stopped it if it is
not completed in a timely manner. IntelliTEAMSG
utilizes multiple blocking points to prevent automatic
operation when your crews are working on the line.
S&C will fully train your operating personnel on
this and all other features of IntelliTEAMSG, with
simple demonstrations utilizing actual controls.

 IntelliTEAMSG Designer also includes
Component Explorer. . . a unique feature that lets
you zoom into a section of the diagram, and move
from section to section, to a particular device you
want to see. Diagram size and complexity are not
a concern.

device. Then click the ID of the device you want to
see. Component Explorer will automatically place that
device in the center of the screen.

Validate provides detailed messages in the Errors
tab of the Team Attributes window, so youll be
able to quickly locate and resolve errors in your
single-line diagram.

 By following this simple procedure, you can create
device configurations for even the most complex
systems.

1. Launch IntelliTEAMSG Designer or create a new

file from the file menu. 3. Place the wire connection points.

8. Change default team settings, such as loading
constraints, to match your actual requirements.

devices, or establish a gateway connection to the

Rapid Self-Healing
This feature of IntelliTEAMSGwhen enabledcan
significantly decrease the self-healing response time
by minimizing the number of switching operations.
If a fault occurs and theres sufficient capacity in
a single source, IntelliTEAMSG will use Rapid Self-
Healing, opening all switches surrounding the faulted
team, then closing one switch to restore service to as
many outaged sections as possible using that source.

If there isnt sufficient capacity in a single source,
IntelliTEAMSG will instead use Expert Self-Healing
to restore service to as many outaged sections as
possible using all available sources.
Heres a detailed example, showing how Rapid
Self-Healing works.
NEW Communication Enhanced
Coordination
When high-speed communication devices such as
S&C SpeedNet Radios or fiber-optics are utilized,
any number of IntelliRupter PulseClosers can share
the same protection curve. Coordination is assured.
Communication Enhanced Coordination shifts
each IntelliRupter upstream of a fault to a slower
protection curve. The devices respond to the curve-
shifting message in 100ms or less... so only the
IntelliRupter closest to the fault opens. This unique
feature provides better circuit segmentation than any
other means now available. Customers will experience
a significant reduction in momentary interruptions.
Post-Restoration
Load Management
After a widespread storm, it may take your operating
personnel quite some time to complete the repairs
to your distribution system which will allow it to
be returned to the normal operating state. The
Post-Restoration Load Management feature of
IntelliTEAMSGwhen enabledprotects the
reconfigured system from loading exceeding the
capabilities of the system, using rules you set.
First, IntelliTEAMSG will attempt to shift load
from an overloaded feeder. If load shifting alone
is insufficient to eliminate the overloadingand
IntelliTEAMSG is allowed toit will then shed the
necessary additional load. IntelliTEAMSG analyzes
the overload condition, determines the amount of load
that needs to be removed to protect the source, and
then uses the load priority settings youve assigned to
determine what loads need to be removed.
NEW Closed-Loop Operation
Ideal for subtransmission networks in which a
closed loop is served from two substations. Using
IntelliTEAMSGs virtually infinite scalability, complex
networks can be configured comprised of any
number of devices, sources, and two-source loops;
the available capacity of any source can be used to
restore service.

Site Automation Testing
The Site Automation Testing feature allows you to
validate IntelliTEAMSG logic and verify settings
of all team members, using real site parameters
and your actual switches and controls. Live
IntelliTEAMSG messages are exchanged through
peer-to-peer communication, so the integrity of
your communication system is verified as well. You
can emulate events and note how IntelliTEAMSG
responds, includingoptionallyactually operating
the switches.
Site Automation Testing requires a PC running Site
Automation Test Manager Software, along with access
to the communication system... either through the
wide-area network or through secure WiFi connection
to an S&C IntelliRupter PulseCloser.
Site Automation Test Manager includes a data
trap that takes control of messaging between
IntelliTEAMSG and the team members. A script file
provides the data necessary to emulate faults, loss of
voltage, etc. Remaining IntelliTEAMSG data exchange
isnt affected. Test results are captured and can be
replayed at any time.
New Normal
After IntelliTEAMSG has reconfigured your
distribution system in response to a fault or loss of
voltage, you may decide to accept that configuration
as the normal operating state of the system.
If thats the case, create a new normal configuration
in IntelliTEAMSG Designer. Then visit one of the
team devices, or establish a gateway connection to the
team communication system. With a click of a button,
IntelliTEAMSG Designer will guide you through the
connection procedure and propagate the new normal
configuration to all team members. If all Ready
conditions are met, the teams will go into Ready.

NEW In-Field Instant Replay
Piecing together event log files to analyze what
happened is difficult and time consuming, especially
when multiple field devices are involved. IntelliTEAM
Designer greatly simplifies the process.
With In-Field Instant Replay, IntelliTEAM Designer
collects the event logs from the affected field devices
and compiles them in a single comprehensive record.
The multi-device event log can be played back on
the single-line diagram that was used to configure
IntelliTEAM SG.

IntelliTEAM Designer provides complete control
over the playback. You can view it in real time, high
speed, or step-by-step. Just select the device involved
in the event. Set the approximate start time and
duration. Then press the GO button.
IntelliTEAM Designer highlights the schematic
segments as it marches through each step, to help
you quickly identify what happened. The device ID
changes color to indicate when a device is not in its
normal state.
