Lesson Idea Template
Name: Sunlight and Seasons
Grade Level: Fourth Grade Content Area: Science Standards Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth. (a. Develop a model to support an explanation of why the length of day and night change throughout the year.) Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Journey North URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/sunlight-seasons Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your classroom: I would use the online project for fourth grade science class. As for the standard, the students study the Earth and the moon. They need to understand why the length of day and night change. The project allows the students to report their daylight and signs of the seasonal change. They will learn the seasonal changes in sunlight affect the entire web of life through the project. They observe the natural world closely, record data, take photos, and make drawings, look for patterns of seasonal change, and note webs of connections. What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Students would require using a computer individually to access the website. Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.): a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school: Students collaborate with other students. If students, see other students work they will be stimulated and raise their motivation. b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Collecting original data will be fun and cultivate students independence. c. Higher-order thinking: The project helps students achieve higher-order thinking. It also helps critical thinking. d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students report their data and pictures. It includes the temperature, weather, air, and trees condition.

LoTi 4 would be the best to describe this learning activity because students share their product or outcome with an audience. How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? I could implement this proposed learning experience by analyzing and comparing other students data. For Internet safety and 1 student privacy policies, Journey North Organization requires to login when students update their data. Students set their Email and password to login for the participation. Therefore, the data should be academic and decent.
