Sharing Circle Course Science 9


Title/Focus

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify ways in which the sky is a useful tool to both them and people that came before
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Paper to brainstorm
A talking stick or a rock
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The room should be set up in a way that students can sit in a circle on the floor, or in their desks.
Introduction Time
Explain that today we will be having a discussion and there are a few things I would like

you to do to prepare for the discussion
Body Time
Topic: Individual 1) One their own, students will reflect on ways in which they use
brainstorm the sky, ways the sky might have been useful to people in the 5 min
past, and their attitude toward sky science right now.
Topic: Share with a 1) With a partner, they will share their reflections with a partner
partner 2) If their perspectives toward sky science are negative, have them 5 min
discuss why that might be.
Topic: Sharing circle 1) Set up the sharing circle
2) Explain:
That a sharing circle is an indigenous practice of passing
knowledge or making decisions.
The idea behind it is that everyones voice is heard and
respected if they choose to speak.
The biggest part of the sharing circle is respect for every
voice and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of 30 min
everyones voice
3) First pass: What ways do they use the sky in their lives?
4) Second pass: What ways did people use the sky in their lives?
5) Third pass: What is your attitude toward the information about
stars and sky science? Why?
6) Fourth pass: Why do we need this knowledge? Why did we want
it in the first place?
Topic: Review 2) With the remaining time, students will review for their quiz 10 min
Conclusion Time
Remind students that being respectful toward one another is to empower every to
share their knowledge in order to benefit everyone 2 min
Remind students of the quiz the next day, dismiss them for their next class
Assessment
Discussion and Observation Formative (Objective 1)
Are students able to discuss their personal relationship with the sky, identifying if they have one or not
Are students discussing the deeper issues of society and how we treat knowledge and education
