their Saturday rest to take part in a gotong-royong in their school. The teachers and

The students turned up as early as 7am and swung into action within minutes. They
were divided into groups and briefed on what to do by their teachers. They were then
sent to different locations within the school premises with one aim to rid their school
of rubbish.
Armed with brooms, dustpans and garbage bags, they went all over the school
the hall, the toilets, the field and the classrooms. A lorry from the Seremban Municipal
Council was brought in to remove all the garbage.
The PTA Chairman said the event was held to inculcate a sense of belonging in the
students. He also advised parents to inculcate the importance of gotong-royong in their
children. He said that children will automatically take the initiative to clean up their
surroundings if they participate in such activities often.

For the second year running, students throughout the country participated in
Malaysias biggest reading marathon recently. This event is organised annually by
Scholastic Inc, the worlds largest publisher and distributor of childrens books.
This years campaign, titled Read 2009 : One Nation Reading Together, was supported
by the Ministry of Education and held in conjunction with the Ministrys 1Malaysia
Reading Camp.
Read 2009 was a simple activity with a big message. Participating students were
required to read recreationally for 2009 seconds (approximately 33 and minutes).
Reading recreationally means that students choose a book of their choice, instead of the
regular school text.
The objective of Read 2009 was to inculcate a love of reading. Recreation reading
is emphasised because students must be able to associate good feelings and pleasant
memories with their reading experience, otherwise reading becomes a chore.

Federal Territory (FT) Day is celebrated on the first day of February every year. This
year the celebrations were held at Dataran Merdeka.
According to Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik,
the festivities were scaled down this year as the ministry had slashed the budget down to
RM3 million compared to the RM7 million spent last year.
The most important thing about the celebration is the 1Malaysia concept, which is
why we held activities that involved all races, said the minister.
A host of activities were held at Dataran Merdeka including traditional games such as
Galah Panjang, Tarik Upih, Dam Cina and Kabadi.
The minister also said that in conjunction with the FT Day, his ministry would be
giving out cash aid to the poor starting next month.

I used to live selfishly : all my decisions were made by putting my own needs and wants first. All this
changed one day.
I was on my way to have lunch when I spotted a street musician he was playing the keyboard and
soliciting donations from passers by. He looked young and was shabbily dressed. As I walked past, I
thought he must be needing the money to feed his addiction to drugs or alcohol.
Then I stopped, rather shocked at myself. I had no right to judge him. On an impulse I reached into
my pocket and pulled out a handful of coins which I dumped into the can in front of him. I went back to
the office.
At the end of the day as I walked to the train station, I saw him packing up. He emptied the money
into a small plastic bag. Then he walked over to a caf and dumped the entire contents into a tin
collection for victims of a bushfire.
He had been playing for charity. I realised how selfish I had been. It took someone to take my money
and donate it to charity for me to realize how easy it is for me to do the same.
