Alloy wheels are wheels that are made from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium. Alloys are
mixtures of a metal and other elements. They generally provide greater strength over pure metals,
which are usually much softer and more ductile. Alloys of aluminium or magnesium are typically
lighter for the same strength, provide better heat conduction, and often produce improved cosmetic
appearance over steel wheels. Although steel, the most common material used in wheel production,
is an alloy of iron and carbon, the term "alloy wheel" is usually reserved for wheels made from
nonferrous alloys.
Casting
Casting-forging (Cobapress)
Thixocasting
Materials
Good metal-mould casting properties (castability, susceptibility to hot tearing and shrinkage
characteristics)
Ability to withstand physical impact (elongation and impact strength)
Corrosion resistance (normal and saline atmospheres)
Fatigue resistance
These requirements have led to the widespread use of hypoeutectic Al-Si primary alloys with 7 to
12% silicon content, varying contents of magnesium (strength-elongation compromise), low iron and
minor impurity concentrations.
Advantages
Alloy wheels decrease the unsprung weight, and because of this lower weight, there is an
improvement in the car's handling, particularly in steering precision. A lighter wheel also makes it
easier for the car to accelerate, and this can give drivers a small increase in gas mileage.
Alloy wheels are made of an alloy of light metals, namely aluminium, nickel, magnesium, or a
combination of these metals. They offer performance advantages over steel wheels, as they are
often several pounds lighter per wheel - less weight means quicker acceleration and faster stopping.
Wheels India Limited (WIL) started production of Forged Aluminium wheel rims from 2005 with a
goal to deliver the best product in Domestic and Global market.
