Alloy wheel

Alloy wheels are wheels that are made from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium. Alloys are
mixtures of a metal and other elements. They generally provide greater strength over pure metals,
which are usually much softer and more ductile. Alloys of aluminium or magnesium are typically
lighter for the same strength, provide better heat conduction, and often produce improved cosmetic
appearance over steel wheels. Although steel, the most common material used in wheel production,
is an alloy of iron and carbon, the term "alloy wheel" is usually reserved for wheels made from
nonferrous alloys.

Casting

The casting process for a Rays Wheel consists of four steps:

Fusion Aluminum metal is heated up into molten liquid.

Molten Metal Treating Process of removing impurities from molten aluminum. Molten
aluminum with no impurities are moved into a holding furnace.
Casting Molten aluminum is poured into a die to form the wheel.
Machine Work Various chemicals are used to prevent corrosion and protect the surface of
the wheel

The major casting processes for wheels are:

Low-pressure die casting (mainly)

Gravity permanent mould casting (less used)

Squeeze-casting process (marginally used)

Rarely used are the following processes:

Counter pressure die casting

Casting-forging (Cobapress)

Thixocasting

Materials

The alloys employed have to meet a range of sometimes conflicting requirements:

Good metal-mould casting properties (castability, susceptibility to hot tearing and shrinkage
characteristics)
Ability to withstand physical impact (elongation and impact strength)
Corrosion resistance (normal and saline atmospheres)
Fatigue resistance

These requirements have led to the widespread use of hypoeutectic Al-Si primary alloys with 7 to
12% silicon content, varying contents of magnesium (strength-elongation compromise), low iron and
minor impurity concentrations.
Advantages

Alloy wheels decrease the unsprung weight, and because of this lower weight, there is an
improvement in the car's handling, particularly in steering precision. A lighter wheel also makes it
easier for the car to accelerate, and this can give drivers a small increase in gas mileage.

Are alloy wheels better than steel?

Alloy wheels are made of an alloy of light metals, namely aluminium, nickel, magnesium, or a
combination of these metals. They offer performance advantages over steel wheels, as they are
often several pounds lighter per wheel - less weight means quicker acceleration and faster stopping.

Advantages of WIL Forged Aluminum Wheel

Stronger Wheel

The Wheel is Stronger as it is made from single alloy billet

Superior Fatigue Life results from High Strength alloy selection and Special Heat Treatment

Forging & spinning aligns the metal grains and shapes contours of the wheel for maximum
strength.

Major weight savings

Aluminum wheels are about 40% lighter than steel wheels.

For a standard size truck with trailer, Reduction of weight up to 400500 kg

Increase in payload

Reduced fuel consumption

Appearance

Aluminum wheels improve a vehicles appearance and value.

Smooth contour & surface finish reduces chances of mud/dirt accumulation

Easy to clean and maintain.

High comfort

Aluminum wheel runs smoother than a steel wheel.

Improved comfort and reduced vibrations.

Uniform Tire wear Increased tire Life.

Manufacturing capability

WIL have a wide range of manufacturing capability

In terms of width: 6.00 to 14

In terms of Diameter: 17.0 to 26

Currently WIL supplies Forged aluminium wheels in three finishes Machined, Polished and
Clear coat (maintenance free) wheels.
