Prior Knowledge/ Connections

Many of the students in the class have traveled to other countries and had experience with
currencies from around the globe. Use these previous experiences to drive a class
conversation about money and the different designs that are depicted on different bills. As
many world currencies have images of leaders on them connect this to the Community
Magnet aspect of the school and the students knowledge of citizenship and traits of a good
citizen. Guide the students to the thinking that these may make good symbols to add on their
own designs.

Lesson Introduction/ Hook

Facilitate a Class discussion about money and the meaning of currency. Ask the students
about the different types of money they have seen and have them compare and contrast the
imagery of different currency. After this initial discussion work through the unit Smartboard
slides of money from around the world. Ask the students what they notice; Symbols, colors,
use of space, size of pictures This discussion will help the students be more successful
when thinking and creating their own designs for the second grade.

Lesson Development

Create Currency!

After the initial discussion of the differents designs of money from around the world have the
students create a rubric for their second grade money. Ask the group, what do you think our
money has to have. Guide the students to the desired response of; monetary amount, school
name, grade level, symbol or their choosing. Remind the students that this design will be able
to show others the important things about Partnership and second grade, and they should
think about this when selecting how they are going to design the bill. The students will be
instructed not to put their name on the front of the page as they will be voting on the top
design later in the lesson. Next show the students the template they will be using. This paper
along with a pencil will be the materials used to start their design. When showing the template
talk to the students about making good use of the space allotted and that they have the
creative freedom to choose how they utilize this space , in regards to size of symbols, word
placement, and the overall look of the piece. Send the students back to their seats to begin to
work on their bills. Put on some design music to add the the creative environment. As the
students finish their creations will be taped to the back whiteboard to display them for the
voting to follow.

The different classes will design a different value bill and the combination of the voted winners
will be used throughout the unit leading up to the Business Bonanza.

*Lawless $1.00 Bill

Altobelli $10.00 Bill
Deans $5.00 Bill
