Phase I: Exploration and Exploration
Before the lesson begins:
Before the lesson starts we will ask them what they think we are doing by looking at the things
we brought.
We will then tell them that we are making ice cream and we will briefly talk about their favorite
kinds of ice cream and any experiences they may want to share.
During the lesson:
We will first ask them how they think the ingredients go together to make ice cream (which
ingredients go in which bag, big or small, and why).
o group talk and working together to reason answers.
Once they make their predictions and discuss as a group as to why they think what, we will share
with them which ingredients go where and why.
o We will ask them if this makes sense and clarify any that are confusing to them.
Transition to Phase II:
We will tell them that now they get the chance to make the ice cream themselves.
We will tell them that they need to work together to measure out the ingredients while the other
person maybe holds their bag.
Phase II: Guided Practice/Differentiation

were trying to make their ice cream.
Transition to Phase III:

together on a worksheet.

Pass out the paper
Phase III: Independent Practice/Assessment
We will offer to read the short story at the beginning of the worksheet, or they can read it.
We will work as a group to answer the questions, but they will mostly work amongst themselves
to answer the questions.

Ice Cream
Do you like ice cream in a bowl or do you prefer to eat it as an ice cream cone? Have you eaten
an ice cream cone on a hot day? If you have, then you know you need to eat it quickly. If you
are too slow, the ice cream melts and starts to drip down the side of the cone! What a mess
that makes!

Ice cream in a bowl is not as messy. You can put chocolate or caramel sauce on top of the ice
cream. You can also put fruit like strawberries or mangos on top. Some people like nuts on their
ice cream. In fact, you can eat ice cream with anything you want!

Ice cream is usually made from frozen dairy products like milk and cream. Fruit is sometimes
added or other flavors like chocolate or vanilla are added. As the cream freezes, it needs to be
stirred slowly. This helps make the ice cream smooth and creamy. Before people had
refrigerators, ice cream was a luxury. It took a lot of work and a lot of time to make. Now
grocery stores sell many different flavors of ice cream. Ice cream is a delicious dessert at the
end of a meal or a great snack when youre hungry.
