Title: The King of Little Things Author: Bil Lepp

Illustrator: David T. Wenzel Publisher/Year: Peachtree publishers 2013

Genre: Folklore

The King of the Little Things is a story about a King who ruled over all the little things in the
land. For instance, he ruled over, coins, candles, combs, keys, knots, nods, knobby knees.
He lived a great life with his wife and enjoyed taking care of the animals in his kingdom. He
was content with his life. Unlike King Normous who was never content and always wanted
more. When King Normous found out there was a King of the little things, he set out to get
him. But the little things helped their king and they rendered King Normous army useless
by eating their swords and giving them fungus. King Normous was upset and locked the
King of the little things in a dungeon. But the little things around the land protested by
poking, shaking, moving, and they even stopped working. The army and the Kings people
demanded that King Normous release the King of the little things and he did. But he never
found his keys again!

Explain how the book appeals to children, their interests, developmental levels, fun
illustrations etc. Give specific examples from the book:

The King of the Little Things is enjoyable for young children for many reasons. The
wordplay is fun. There are rhymes and tongue twisters like, He was king of coins, candles,
combs, keys, knots, nods, knobby knees, bottles buttons beetles, burps, chiggers, chips
chickadee chirps. The story is fun as well because it shows the underdog winning in the
end. Children can relate to this because they arent in control of their lives as much as their
parents are. To them, they could seem like they are the King of the little things and their
parents are King Normous. Being locked in a dungeon can be relatable to being grounded in
their room. This book would be developmentally appropriate for ages 6-8 because it is
lengthy, and the story is a bit more mature. The illustrations are fun paintings in which the
artist depicts exaggerated emotions on the characters faces.
