Thesis Development
A good thesis statement is not a statement of fact:
Voluntourism is a form of tourism in which travelers participate in voluntary work, typically
for a charity.

It is also not a statement of intent:

This essay will examine the strengths and weaknesses voluntourism.

It should not be in the form of a question:

What are the limits of voluntourism?

It should not be self-evident:

Voluntourism has both supporters and detractors.

A good thesis statement is a statement of position that requires evidence in the body of
the essay for support.
Three Models of Thesis Statements
The simple statement of position
Overall, the voluntourism is beneficial to international development.

The roadmap thesis statement

Overall, voluntourism is beneficial because it promotes a, leads to b,
and strengthens c.

The complex thesis statement

Although there are disadvantages to voluntourism in international
development, overall it is beneficial because it promotes a, leads to b,
and strengthens c.

Writing tips
Proof-read. A few grammatical mistakes can disrupt the flow
of your writing and the power of your idea can be lost or
weakened. Let the essay sit for a day or two and then re-read
SIMPLIFY your writing. Focus on your ideas and arguments -
try not to lose key points in long-winded or 'flowery'
sentences. Be concise.
Dont try and say too much (sometimes less is more)
Dont edit too much while you write
Citations

arguments, at least three (3) of which must be academic.
You must provide citations for all sources, using ASA
formatting
For ASA guidelines please see the Manuscript Formatting
section of this website from Purdue University

your topic

To establish what research has been done and what the

different arguments are in the literature

To lend credibility to your argument by

citing studies to back up your claims
providing quotations to support your points
strengthening your argument by refuting the opposing side
What is an academic citation?
Articles from an academic journal

Blogs
How to find sources

Note: read the abstracts at the start of articles or the
blurb on the back of a book to get a sense of what the
article/book is about and what arguments it will make
on the topic.
Using sources effectively
good quality recent, reliable, and authoritative.

relevant evidence must relate directly to the thesis, and

the evidence in each body paragraph must relate to the point
of the paragraph.

well-integrated when you include secondary material in

your paper, you are expected to engage with it, to connect
the material to your own argument.
When to cite sources
Direct quotes
You must use quotation marks and cite if you are including three or more
consecutive words from a source.

Paraphrasing
When you are communicating ideas from a source but a direct quotation
isnt necessary
When you are summarizing factual information
A PARAPHRASE MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

THOSE OF SECONDARY SOURCES.
