Lesson Class #1: Post Field Trip Letter Writing

Social Studies 2.2.1Students will appreciate how stories of the past connect individuals and
communities to the present (grade 2)
Social Studies 2.2.2 appreciate how Aboriginal and Francophone peoples have influenced the
development of the students community (grade 2)
ELA 1.1 talk with others about something recently learned (grade 1)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify similarities and differences between experiences of Aboriginal children from 150 years
and their own lives today
2. Inform others of their experiences at Fish Creek Park verbally and in writing
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Each student writing journal
Board and marker for writing common ideas
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Have students get their writing journals before they sit down
Have students sit at the carpet with their writing journals
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Ask students to think back about their field trip last week
o Where did they go?
o What did they do? 2 min
o What did they learn?
o Who helped them learn?
Body Time
Review of key 1) Have students discuss what they remember most about
learning the field trip with the person sitting beside them
2) Have each student share their 1 favorite memory with
the class
3) Generate a list of topics students can write about based
on student responses
a. Fish Creek

b. Tipi and story of the Chinook
c. 5 Stations tipi build, food, bison bones,
matching items then and now, traditional games
d. Outdoor adventure
e. Videos
f. Key words learned before field trip

Letter Writing 1) Tell students they all get to write a letter to someone
describing their experiences on their field trip
2) Discuss opening and closing of a letter
a. Write an example on the board (Dear and
Sincerely, )

3) Have students write a letter to an imaginary First
Nations child that lived in Fish Creek over 150 years ago
and tell them about your experience in the park.
4) Walk around and check in with student progress,
provide assistance where necessary
Differentiation Grade 1s can illustrate and label their experiences
Conclusion Time
Thank everyone for attending the field trip and sharing about their
