everyone on his way.

II. DISCUSSION OF METAFICTIONAL ELEMENTS

Deadpool is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics

character of the same name, distributed by 20th Century Fox starring Ryan Reynolds as
Deadpool/ Wade Wilson and is directed by Tim Miller. Deadpoll is described as a
wisecracking mercenary with accelerated healing but severe burn-scar over his body
after undergoing an experimental mutation. The writers described Deadpool as "fun to
hang out with ... in short doses, while Reynolds promised a more "authentic" and
comic-faithful version of the character than the one he portrayed in a movie he
previously appeared - X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Before the first scene of the film itself, the movie Deadpool had already shown a
meta-cinematic effect on the introduction of the actors starring the film. Different from
the usual, the starring actors are presented not by their real name but instead were
given a title name or a label. For an instance, the lead actor who played the character of
Deadpool was not introduced as his real life name Ryan Reynolds, but instead he was
introduced as Gods Perfect Idiot. This was then accompanied with a paused scene
from the movie itself when Deadpool was on a fight inside the villians car. Here we see
a magazine featuring the real Ryan Reynolds in the cover as the Sexiest Man Alive
along with a picture of him and his wife Blake Lively at the side. A card of Green Lantern
which is another superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds is also shown at the scene
adding more context that he is a well-known Hollywood actor. The character is aware
that he is in a film after becoming Deadpool, though before that point Wade Wilson does
make a joke about Reynolds' role in Green Lantern. Here we see that the actor playing
the role of his character is aware that he is in a fictional movie and the character
Deadpool is also aware that he is being played by the actor and he is the main
character in a movie.
The first scene of the movie then starts with Deadpool on the backseat of a taxi
and is clearly bored with nothing to do. Upon doing several things to desperately
entertain himself, he found a gum stuck at the ceiling of the cab, picks it up and throws it
at the camera, making it seem that he is aware that he is being filmed for a movie.

Right after the taxi scene, while seating on the edge of a pass-over bridge on the
highway, Deadpool casually greeted his audience and ask them if they are wondering of
how he got his own movie. This scene breaks the fourth barrier of the movie because
the character is directly interacting with the viewer proving that he is well aware that he
is a character inside a movie and he is being watched.

From the beginning to the first 15 minutes of the film, Deadpool constantly
interacts with his audience making short remarks and comedic comments. However,
when the flashback starts and his character of Wade Wilson was introduced, the fourth-
wall-breaking stopped. Although Deadpool is the same character as Wade Wilson,
Wade doesnt interact with the viewers because the story of Wade is just being narrated
by Deadpool in the movie - another meta-cinematic approach in which the character in
the story tells another story of his own. The scene went back to back to present then his
earlier life of being Wade Wilson, constantly changing the time-zone of the film until he
finished telling his background story of why he is fighting the bad guys and his narration
finally catches up with the present time stopping the constant flashbacks.

There is also one particular scene in the movie where Weasel Wades Best
friend, suggest he star in a horror film because he looks like Freddy Cougar in a film A
Nightmare on Elm Street after seeing Wades burnt face.

Throughout the entire movie, the character of Deadpool was the only one
interacting with the audience and is the only one who seems to be aware that he or the
others are inside a film. The other charcters, although Deadpool makes it obvious, are
unaware and or unconscious that they are being filmed and are being watched by the
viewers.

Another element of it being meta-fiction is shown when Deadpool went at

Xaviers Academy where the X-Mens resides, there he was greeted by Negasonic and
Colossus alone and so he made remark that the house is too big for only the two of
them and adding that it is almost like the studio couldnt afford another X-Men. It is
clear here that Deadpool is talking about the production staffs of the movie not being
able to pay more actors to participate in the film that he is on.

Additionally at the final scene, when Deadpool was about to reveal himself to
Vanessa, he indirectly made a reference to the authors previous movie Wolverine, as
he uses Hugh Jackmans face aka Wolverine as a mask to cover his own. After his
reconciliation with Vanessa, he the kissed her and made a sign signaling the audiences
that the movie is over. Till the very end, the movie sticks to its breaking the fourth-
barrier as Deadpool appeared again on screen after the movie credits, telling the
audiences to go home for the movie has ended but leaving a hint that he is working on a
next movie as a sequel of the one that he just appeared on.

III. EVALUATION/COMMENTARY

Deadpool, unlike other Marvels work was the first one to break the fourth barrier
in a film making it a movie under the genre of metafiction or metacinema. All in all, it
was completely entertaining and the comedic interaction of Ryan Reynolds with the
audiences surely made the film more interesting and exciting to watch. Reynolds, along
with the other actors portrayed their characters exactly as how it was supposed to be
and did a great job in making the film lively and not boring for the viewers. With a well
written script full of vulgar words and uncensored remarks, the film really targeted the
attention of the viewers with its relatable usage of language and way of speaking
making it irreverent and uproariously funny without being offensive, dishonest and
provocative for the viewers. A clever script plus Reynolds and Baccarins charming
exchange of sarcastic remarks, the audience automatically fell in love with their
character making it impossible to hate the movie's plot. The remarkable acting of all the
characters add up to the fully entertaining set up of the movie making the whole film
worthy to watch.

The use of audience interaction also made an atmosphere of reality that makes the
audience feel as if they are someone who belongs in the world of Deadpool and that
this world is close to the reality that they know. This element increases the attention of
the audience to engulf them with the film and enjoy it from the very beginning till the
very last. The director really did a great job in directing this film making it worthy of its
awards and nominations. Aside from the shots and effects used in the cinematography
of the film, the sounds and music are also picked amazingly which gives off a good vibe
to the viewers and romantic aura when in every Wade and Vanessa scene.

Although contrary to the typical superhero movies, what makes Deadpool different is
the attitude of the main character himself that makes it appropriate for the movie to be
entitled "Deadpool" for Wade shows no fear of death and is ready to die to save the
people he cares about and loves. Unlike the other superheroes, Deadpool performs his
"heroic" act in a way that is not really heroic but the thought of it is the one that shows
his real intention.

Overall, the entire movie was fun to watch and there isnt a moment of dullness.
The staff and director's effort into making this low budget movie into a masterpiece is
much appreciated. The only aspect that can be improved however is the casting of
actors. The limited casting made the movie look out of budget than it really is. Another
problem is that there is only very little of Wade's history before his job as a mercenary, a
longer and a little elaboration of that could have explained more of why Wade acts like
how he does. But nevertheless, aside from that, the movie was a success on being
humorous, interesting and out of ordinary. Its a movie worth watching because of its
use of various creative styles and elements that plays with the audiences' attention and
imagination.
