Fruits and Veggies Rainbow

Objectives:

1st graders to be able to identify fruits and vegetables and there benefits according to
color.

At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:


1. Identify fruits and vegetables according to color.
2. Identify the benefits of fruits and vegetables according to color.
3. To learn a new fruit or vegetable.

Worksheet 2 - Draw your favorite fruit or vegetables according to color.
Rainbow poster
Cut outs of fruits and vegetables
Pencils

Overview of Lesson Fruit and Veggies Rainbow is an interactive way for children to learn new
fruits and vegetables and their benefits. This lesson strives to have students understand the
importance of eating fruits and vegetables and hopes to encourage students to eat a wide variety
of these food groups. Students will be given a worksheet that lists the benefits of fruits and
vegetables according to color. They will be able to participate by adding fruit or vegetable flash
card to the fruit and vegetable rainbow according to color. They will be given a worksheet to
draw their favorite fruits and vegetables according to color. Finally, a star or sticker of
completion.

Anticipatory Set or Motivator


Students get to identify fruit or vegetable they are given
Students are able to add their fruit or vegetable to the rainbow
Students will be asked if their flashcard is a fruit or vegetable
All students will receive a sticker or star for lesson completion

Lesson Sequence/Procedures:

1. Introduce lesson to students. Today we will be talking about fruits and vegetables and
why they are good for you. Ask students what their favorite fruit is? Ask students what
their favorite vegetable is? Ask students how may fruits and vegetables they think they
should have a day? Briefly discuss on how many fruits and vegetables they should have
and their importance
2. Have students pair up with each other each student will be given 1 fruit or vegetable
flashcard, both will be given a Handout 1 fruit or vegetable card to each student and
packet of the 2 worksheets.

3. Introduce the rainbow of fruits and vegetables rainbow.

4. Start of by describing the benefits of one of the colors on the rainbow lets say red. Red
fruits and vegetables are good for your heart can everyone point to their heart.

5. Then ask students with red fruits and vegetables to come up to the front of the class say
the fruit or vegetable they have and place there cut out on the rainbow.

6. Continue this procedure with the other colors of the rainbow.

7. When the rainbow is complete review each color groups benefits again with worksheet
1. Finally discuss why it is important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables from the
rainbow.

8. At the end of the lesson each student will receive a sticker for participating.

Closure By the end of the lessons students will be able to identify different fruits and vegetables
according to color and their benefits. Students will understand the importance of eating a variety
of fruits and vegetables and how many they should eat a day.

Extension Activities Students will be given worksheet 2. They will be able to draw favorite fruit
or vegetable according to color.
