About AFP/SME
The Association for Finishing Processes of SME (AFP/SME)
covers all technology, process, and management aspects of clean-
ing and coating metal and plastic parts used in manufactured prod-
ucts. Members are in the big automotive and aerospace plants
and Tier One supplier facilities, as well as in companies manufac-
turing everything from office furniture to toys. AFP/SME mem-
bers include process engineers who implement automated powder
coating lines; product engineers who specify liquid, waterborne,
or electrostatic finishes; managers of processes such as deburring,
buffing, polishing, or chemical pretreatment; and supervisors of
post-production air and water treatment, emissions control, recy-
cling, and liquid waste and sludge disposal systems. AFP/SME
sponsors national conferences and regional clinics on topics such
as planning painting system layouts, troubleshooting coating du-

Preface
Powder coating use hit the North American market in the late
1960s. Its usage has continued to grow since that time. Offering
superior appearance, mechanical-, corrosion-, and solvent-resis-
tance properties, powder coating use has taken the finishing mar-
ket by storm. In the early days of this technology, potential end
users first had to be educated about the powder coating process.
Companies today that paint their products always ask about
powder as an alternative to using a liquid coating. This accep-
tance of powder coating did not happen overnight, however. It
took more than 30 years for suppliers and organizations like SME
to educate the marketplace on the benefits of this technology.
As a result of increased awareness, powder coating is being used
on more and more products, including products that just recently
were considered impractical for powder coating. For instance, high-
temperature applications where the product may reach tempera-
tures of up to 1,000 F (538 C) are routinely powder coated today.
Conversely, many temperature-sensitive substrates like plastic and
wood products are now powder coated with UV-curable materials.
Only a few years ago both high temperature products and tem-
perature-sensitive substrates were considered impossible to pow-
der coat.
As always, powder coating is a low-cost, high-performance fin-
ish. The process is environmentally friendly. Similar attributes
are not available with any other organic coating technology, at
least not in one package. Such attributes are the main reason for
the tremendous growth and acceptance of this technology.
Along with improvements in the industry, equipment suppli-
ers have developed improved systems to deal with the nagging
