EDU 203

As a child, I have always enjoyed working with children. Throughout my life, I began

choosing careers that circulated around people whether it was with infants, older children, or the

elderly. My passion is to help people and watch them succeed at goals that will help them grow.

At the age of 27 I began working at a company that specialized in assisted living skills for

disabled children. When I first arrived I can truly say I was a bit intimidated because I had very

little knowledge of the different types of disabilities and the severities as well. After a few

months of training and years of working in this group home I knew that this was going to be the

field that I would enjoy. Having an understanding that the wages werent very well and I was

raising two children, made it somewhat hard for me to provide for my family I left the job after 5

years of being there to try and find something better financially to support my family. My heart

always remained there throughout the years. In the beginning of my career, a former supervisor

told me that I had a special gift of working with children and that I should go into a field that will

inspire me and others. This is the moment I knew I wanted to truly become a teacher.

Personal Philosophy of Special Education

My current understanding of the school system is a learning process for me as I am

continuing my education to get a complete understanding of it. There are rules that all teachers

must follow to make sure each and every student is given a fair opportunity of learning and all of

their needs are met accordingly. In todays society we as educators should not try and change a
child but we should help them attain the necessary skills to help them grow. This is a ground

rule for me in life. Teaching students about moral values and intellectual knowledge that all

students will need to become great citizens. Learning to respect those of authority and also

teaching them to be considerate of all people. These are some of the values that I think is

important in my teaching career.

There are so many different ways to teach children because they are so unique in their own

way. Working in groups is a strategy for me because I feel it will allow each student to develop

a relationship with their peers in a learning environment. Developing socialization skills early in

life will help them, and also learning from each other is important as well. As we see in our

world today, there are many different types of cultures that we see on a daily basis and making

sure that each student feels wanted and valued is important to me. Letting each child know about

the many cultures that we have and teaching them to appreciate others as well.

Being consistent is a quality that I have that is important for students. Children are

known to succeed more with things that they are familiar with. Patience is also a great trait that

all teachers should have when working with students. Working in the classroom can be

somewhat of a challenge but with time and patience the hard work will pay off. I am pursuing

my career at UNLV and obtaining my bachelors degree in Special Education and continue my

career in education until retirement. Throughout my life I feel that every student should be given

the opportunity of an equal education. Whether they are disable or not all students should be

treated with respect and dignity so they can be successful in everything that they do.
