Several months ago, I wrote my Service Learning plan and objectives. My aims were
clearly stated and I believe my ideas very solid. My plan was to spend fifteen hours with my
grandmother, teaching her how to use an Ipad. While she has had this piece of technology for a
couple of years, I wanted to broaden her horizons. I had several facets of this device that I
wanted to show my grandma, or at least increase her knowledge and competence of the particular
area. I believe my vision ended up being successful and my grandmother really grasped these
topics. It is certainly safe to say that the two of us had a great time with this assigment. I ended
up doing seven sessions, all ranging from an hour to three hours max.
The first session was a two hour introductory session, going over some very basic
functions with the Ipad. I showed my grandmother how to use the internet, basically. I showed
my grandma how to use safari and search things. My grandmother learned she can practically
type in anything she wanted on google and tons of things would come up. From just looking up a
fact/information or people, places, and things my grandmother was amused at all the information
available at our fingertips. The main website I showed her was Youtube, my personal favorite
website on the internet. This certainly was not the last of the site as it has many functions. In this
section, I showed grandma what she could find on Youtube and how to find it. In short, anything
you want to find, be it music, movie clips, tutorial videos, highlights, talk show hosts, and
recapping or uploading of events is on there. I also showed her e-mail, which she never really
used. I set her up with a g-mail account and she successfully sent me an e-mail, which
The second session was the beginning of the App store, spanning an hour. I showed
grandma how to purchase apps and then play them on her device. She is and has always been a

juge jeopardy fan. Interestingly, there is actually a jeopardy game on the Ipad. I versed her in
jeopardy and got demolished! This was easily one of the best lessons because it was fun. Even
The third session was the App store continued, lasting for two hours. Since applications
are such a vital part of these devices, we played more games. We played a word game and True/
False. My grandmother loves crossword puzzles and has great knowledge of facts so it was a
perfect lesson, once again. These games were not against one another, thankfully! My grandma
showed her incredible knowledge in these games. She will definitely draw a lot from this part of
the plan, as she will probabaly play these games in her spare time.
The fourth session was was the music lesson. This lesson went for two hours. In this part
of the program, I showed my grandma different ways to access and listen to music. I showed her
Apple Music, Spotify, Sound Cloud, Pandora, and Youtube. In fact, I actually helped her set up a
Spotify. She showed her understanding by going back to the app and playing music. We listened
to music together, some great old classics like Billy Joel and the Rolling Stones, as examples.
For Youtube, I showed her she could type in any song and listen to it on this website. Grandma
once again passed with flying colors and showed me how to access Youtube, like before.
The fifth session was the midterm assessent, which took two hours. Of course this scared
my grandmother, but it went really well. This was basically a session to go over and test her
comprehension of everything we had done less far. Again, my grandmother passed with flying
colors. She would show me her e-mail and open and read a paper I sent her, go onto Youtube and
show me a video, go to her Spotify account, play a game with me in the App store, and she
The sixth session was a very long one and we covered a great deal of ground in four
hours. With this said, it was fun and the time flew by. I taught my grandmother how to watch
movies on the Ipad, how to read books, shop online, and showed her social media. For movies, I
had her download the Netflix app and showed her what it had to offer. Also, I had her type in a
few movie wesbites like Starz and HBO in Safari. Once again, I had her use Youtube, which she
now knows like the back of her hand. On Yotuube, she learned sometimes you can purchase
movies to watch, view movie trailers, and watch movie clips that have been uploaded. By
illustrating all these apps and sites, she certainly has some good options to watch some sort of tv
on her Ipad. After that, we did reading on the device. This was also multi-faceted. My
grandmother learned how to read with the Ibooks appn, purchase books online, and how to look
for books that maybe had online text. With little assistance, she was bale to go back and do this.
To end the course, my grandma was finally exposed to social media. I exposed her to the three
major social media platforms: Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. I illustrated how they each
worked and what exactly was on them. In addition, I had her view my profiles, along with those
of famous people to get a gage of what these forums are like. While I did not have her create one,
To conclude the curriculum, I gave my grandmother a final. Like the midterm, I tested
her on what she had learned from that point on. I should add she was very studious and took
notes on how to operate her Ipad. Needless to say, I allowed the test to be open note. For the final
time, she demonstrated her ability to use her Ipad, accessing books, online shopping like Ebay
and Amazon, movies, and social media platforms. We really had a great time with this and
enjoyed it. This assignment goes with the ISTE Standard of Computational Thinker. She was

able to develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that
leverage the power of technology. She used the Ipad and had to use her mind and new-found
