Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing

Opportunity in your classroom:

I would use Journey North as a way to implement a project inside the classroom. Students will work
with a partner and be assigned a particular tree around the school premises. The students will visit the
tree on a regular basis, when instructed by the teacher. The students will work together to sketch the
buds that they see each time they make a visit to the tree. With all of the data that is collected, students
will report their information to Journey North. Students will then report back to the class and give a
presentation on their findings.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a

classroom?

Students will either need access to a computer or iPad in order to access Journey Norths website or
Journey North from the app store.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).

a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond
their school: Students will work with a partner during this project. Students will also be
collaborating online with other students and mentors (scientists) online to complete this project.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or

producing original products as a result of engaging in a project): Student will go outside
during designated times to check the progress of their designated tree. They will create their
data that is then shared with users online.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be evaluating their own completed work with their
partner as they are finalizing the results of their projects.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
Students will publish a hard copy of their work to the teacher, as well as publishing their work
online with their mentor scientist. Students will be also able to reference back to Journey North
as a future resource for student collaboration.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

For this lesson, the teacher will keep a record with the names of each student that is participating in
this particular project. The students that are participating will have to be monitored to make sure they
stay completely anonymous with the mentor scientist. The teacher will also be in contact with the
administrative reassurance to make sure this is benefiting student learning and is following safety
rules of the school.
