So it is necessary to have some systems which perform serial I/O
operation between PC and out side device using optical fiber link. And
exactly link-b fulfills this need. It provides the simplest and powerful
way for serial communication flexibility through optical fiber. It is very
easy to install and use. Also one can enhance its flexibility through
software.
1.3 FUNCTION OF MAX 232 (RS-232 TRANCEIVER):
The computer communicates from serial com port which is at RS232C
levels i.e. at 12V. Transceiver max 232 performs the function of
converting RS232C signals to TTL levels & vice versa.
1.4 HARDWARE SETTINGS:
Switch off the power supply of PC. To perform this experiment the com
ports of PC are used. On board 9 pin d-type (female) connectors are
provided for interfacing with the PC. Two 9-pin cables with end
clamped with 9-pin d-type female connectors and the other end
connected to 9-pin d-type male connector are provided with this kit.
Connect d-type female connector end of one cable to one of the com
ports of PC and the 9-pin d-type connector end to CN6. Similarly
connect other cable to other port & CN7.
1.5 EQUIPMENTS:
a)Link b kit with power supply.
b)Patch cords.
c)1 meter fiber cable.
d)9 pin d connector cable – 2 nos.
e)Computers- PC, PC/XT, 386 or 486 – 2 nos. (Minimum).

1.6 PROCEDURE:
1) Make connections as shown in figure.
2)Connect one end of 9 to 9 pin cable to PC com 1 port and
other end to connect on link b kit. Then connect one end of 9 to 9 pin cable to PC com 2
ports and other end to connect on link b kit.
3) Switch on the power supply.
4)Connect com 1 post on the kit (RS 232 section) to in post of
digital buffer section.
5) Connect the out post of digital buffer to the post TX in of
transmitter.
6) Slightly unscrew the cap of LED SFH756V on kit. Do not
remove the cap from the connector. Once the cap is
loosened, insert the one meter fiber into the cap. Now tight
the cap by screwing it back.
7)Slightly unscrew the cap of RX1 photo transistor with TTL
logic output SFH551V. Do not remove the cap from the
connector. Once the cap is loosened, insert the other end of
fiber into the cap. Now tighten the cap by screwing it back.
8) Connect out post to receiver section to com2 post on the kit.
9)After putting on one of the PC go to START menu, all
programs, accessories, communication and then click on
hyper terminal.
10)
A new window will open, where you double click on
hyper term, two windows will open, one at the background
and other with title connection description which will be
active.

11)Enter the name in the box by which you would like to store
your connection. Also you could select the icon provided below. The back ground window
title will change to the name provided by you.
12)
Then specify connect using by selecting direct to com1
or port where your cable is connected and then click ok.
13)
Please check the port you have selected and the ports
you are connecting.
14)
Now window with title com 1 properties will appear
where port setting should be done as shown below and click
on OK.
15)
For bits per second setting you could select them for
different speeds. Do not exceed it above 115200 bps.
16)After the above setting you click OK. The back ground
window will become active.
17)
Click on file, save as, and save it in the directory,
which you want.
18)Perform the same procedure on the other computer
connected to other terminal.
Note:-
1) Bits per second – 9600.
2) Data bit – 8.
3) Parity – None.
4) Stop bits – 1.
