1. Read the text about careers. Then complete the sentences 1-7 with a highlighted word from the text.

In the past in the UK, many people had a career for life, than is until they decided to
retire. There was often a very clear career path, so people knew where they would be in a
certain number of years. A key part of this was the appraisal where your manager would
assess your performance each year or every six months. A good appraisal could mean that
you climbed the career ladder much faster by being promoted quickly. Appraisals are still
important, but theyre just as important for a good reference as they are for getting
promoted. Many people, when they dont get promoted as fast as they hoped, choose to
resign and look for another job. Of course, it works the other way as well. You wouldnt be
fired (or sacked) for a bad appraisal, unless you has done something wrong, but the
company could choose not to promote you. In bad economic times, peoples job insecurity
often increases, so a good appraisal can make people feel more secure.

1. Read the text about careers. Then complete the sentences 1-8 with a highlighted word from the
text.

From being a salesman in a shop, Jack Wayman went on to start what has become probably the
largest trade show in the word, the International CES. The event has launched some of the most
famous electronics products in history; from the Camcorder and Compact Disc Player in 1981 to
Tablets, Netbooks and Android Devices in recent years. But its start in 1967, which attracted some
200 exhibitors and 17,500 delegates, faced many challenges. The planned vanue, McCormick
Place in Chicago, burned down right in front of Jacks eyes in January and the exhibition had to be
quickly moved to a new location in Nwe York City! When the International CES started, it was all
very different. A simple one-paragraph contract with all suppliers from caterers and hospitality
through to photography was all that was needed. Today the show has expanded to include a
programme of 500 speakers giving a range of talks, workshop with more audience involvement
and demonstrations of products. CEOs rank it as one of their top 10 most desired speaking
opportunities. Not surprising when there are 3,000 exhibitors, 5,000 journalists and analysts and
nearly 150,000 delegates from over 140 countries.
