OKay, SO I'VE STARTED
SOMETHING HERE...
n last issue's editorial |
[| about bumping
into the guy who inspired
the Black Hands character,
Nitro Fergueson, Someone |
had gamed with just briefly - |
- over 24 years ago. It would
seem I've unwittingly sec
something into motion.
‘The response that editori-
al generated was pretty amaz-
ing. Apparently readers really
enjoyed the small glimpse
into the history behind the strips, So much in fact thac
many of you wrote me to ask for more of the same on
some of the other characters.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised by such interest. Five
years ago when my buddy Lew Herring and I made a trek
down to Muncie to do a store signing at the Wizard's Attic
a strange thing happened.
After introducing myself to the guy behind the count-
er, I pointed to Lew and said, “Oh, this is my friend, Lew
Herring.”
‘The clerk paused for a moment (I'm not making this
up), picked up a four sider and asked Lew to oll it. We
were both battled until he explained, “You wrote, “If you
ever run into Lew Herring ask him how you should read
a four sider!”
Indeed he was right — in the introduction to Tales
from the Vault a year or so previously I had written just
that after pointing out that Lew was the inspiration for
Bob Herzog.
Funny thing is, at the time I didn't think anyone really
read those introductions, I've learned since how wrong |
was,
I suppose it’s actually fitting to poke abour KODTs
early history considering how the comic is quickly
approaching its 100th issue. So for the next few issues as
we count down toward that important milestone we'll be
looking back at some of real life characters who inspired
the the personalitics you've come to know over the years in
the strips,
Before doing so however, I'd like to point out chat just
because Bob Herzog is a slacker who is bullied by his dad
and works in a game store in exchange for free swag does-
nt mean you should give Lew strange looks if you ever
meet him.
To be sure there's a ‘little’ of Bob in there, but Lew is
actually a very energetic and successful career-minded
individual who isn't nearly as wrapped up in games as Bob.
(We'll learn more about Lew next month and how he
inspired Bob by the way). And if you ever meet Joel Bozell
(the guy Brian VanHoose is based on) you'll immediately
notice he’s thin as a rail and has black hair (not red), Oh,
and T've never known him to flip a table in his life
(although Lew did flip a table once ~ which is what
inspired the time honored tradition of ‘table flipping’ in
KODT).
So take everything you read here with a grain of salt
when it comes to comparing the characters to the real
people who loosely inspired them,
‘This issue we're going to be dealing with che character
of Sara Felton — the level headed, serious minded role-
2
playing cousin of B.A,
Felton.
Anyone who has been
following KODT since
the beginning knows the
strip started out with
something noticeably
missing from the charac-
ter line up — a female
gamer.
It seems strange now
looking back, but the
fact is the first three years
of KODT’s run in
Shadis Magazine deale
with JUST the four guys,
B.A, Dave, Bob and Brian,
Shortly after the first issue of Knights of the Dinner
Table hit the streets in the summer of 1994, | was work-
ing the booth at Origins wien Dana Blankenship from
Steve Jackson Games walked up to me.
“Love the comic!” she said holding up her copy proud-
ly to be signed. Then she quickly followed with, “How
come you don't have a female gamer representing?”
Srey PRE) aac :
A
“Because | can't draw women.” | admitted.
“You need a girl at the table!” she shot back as I hand-
ed her issue back to her.
John Zinser [my partner at the time] who was standing
nearby simply shrugged as Dana looked to him to back
her up.
“He can't draw women.” he apologized, “What can I
ay?
Dana was having none of that. “You need a woman in
the strip!” she said pointing a finger at me before heading
off to her booth.
“[ think she was serious. Sounds like you need to put a
woman in the strip.” John commented apparently amused
by the confused look on my face.
‘Well, alter hearing the same demand a dozen times
from as many readers throughout the rest of that summer
it slowly sunk in that maybe KODT did need to be ‘rep-
resenting’ when it came to female gamers,
When it came time to solicit the cover art for KODT
#2, [told Jason Holmgren (the cover artist) that weld be
adding a female character to the line up.
My plan was simple. I'd have him draw a female char-
acter on the cover and | would then use it as a guide to cre-
ate the character using MY drawing style in the strips.
When Jason asked what the character should look like |
didn't need to think on it for more than a second,
[turned to the only female gamer I knew at the time
for my inspiration — my wife, Barbara.
Now, before I tell you about the Barb-Sara connection
lec me point out I'm entering dangerous territory here.
Barb has been helping out with the magazine for years
(even going back to the early SHADIS days) as a shadow
editor of sorts.
She's the person I've always read new strips to for & first
reaction. The person I've always most trusted to tell me if
something I've written is a keeper or a “try again’ piece,
(Well, that’s half true -- I can always trust the other guys
in the KODT D-Team to be brutally honest to the point
of bringing me to tears but that’s another story).
