former prime minister Datuk Seri (now Tun) Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1991. The
main thrust of this concept is that the nation should achieve developed country
status in its own mould by the year 2020.

Badlisyah Abdul Ghani, President of Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance
Professionals (CIIF), says the professional body helps to enhance professional
credibility of industry talent and promotes continuous learning.

e of use and serve the country
youre living and working in. Find
yourself a position to deliver value
to someone and someone will see the value in
what you do. Then you will go far in your career.
This is the sound advice from Badlisyah Abdul
Ghani, President of the Chartered Institute of
Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF), to young
talent entering the workforce. He continues,
You want a space where you can be of use,
for the betterment of the organisation, yourself
and the country youre working in. Young
graduates must have focus and perseverance,
be passionate about the work they do, and
deliver it to the best of their abilities in order
to succeed.
When asked what the challenge for the Islamic
finance industry was in hiring and grooming
young talent, Badlisyah says it is how many
of them want to do big things instantly upon
joining. Fresh graduates presume they are
entitled to good pay and high position but
they forget they lack the necessary work
experience and skill set to fit into the work
environment, says the CIIF President. They

want to do things their way instead of how
the organisation wants it done. Before they
are entitled to those benefits, they will have
to deal with those shortcomings and balance
their perspective with that of the organisation.
Another challenge is fresh graduates
expect everything such as a room, company
handphone and other perks to be ready for
them when they start work instead of making
do with what is available. Thats why some
companies give fresh graduates the bare
essentials, to test how they would cope with
the bare minimum.

passion. If you focus
mainly on money, you
tend to be selfish and do
just enough for yourself.

On his thought about Gen Z that is currently
entering the workforce, Badlisyah is of the
opinion that the new generation has a broader
perspective of the world as they are educated
differently and even more IT-savvy. Gen Z is
pretty down to earth and generally responsible
but they are still new to the job market for us
to have a good feel about their characteristics.
Meanwhile, Gen Y is very team oriented, have
high expectations and achievement centric
but prone to job hopping.
Badlisyah explains that CIIFs role is to
set the standards for talent in the Islamic
financial industry. CIIF helps to enhance their
professional credibility and spur continuous
learning on certain industry standards
throughout their careers. Working closely with
education providers, trainers and industry
players, CIIF acts as a bridge between the
academia and those in the industry. We
want to produce more professional talent
and implement best practices for the Islamic
finance industry. Our scope is also international
as we want to ensure a certain level of parity
in the industry, and enhance it by bringing and
adapting the set standards and best practices
to other countries as well.

He says graduates who are members of
professional bodies like ICAEW, CPA and ACCA
are perceived as being more valuable as they
are in a group subjected to strict standards and
quality benchmarks set by those professional
bodies. They are seen as disciplined and
governed by a set of rules and ethical code
of conduct. Such professional qualification will
definitely boost the employability of graduates
as they are recognised by employers as being
a few levels up and are remunerated better
than those who are not.
According to Badlisyah, both the conventional
and Islamic finance industries want talent
with the right attitude. Beyond conventional
banking and financial systems, you need to
know the shariah but its something you can
acquire. As a law graduate, I didnt have the
necessary shariah knowledge so I worked
quickly to find the key subjects I needed to
know. Then I read, did research and learned
about shariah laws from books and those in
the know to enhance my knowledge about
Islamic finance.

CREATE AND DELIVER VALUE
As a new kid on the financial block, the Islamic
finance industry is developing and expanding
fast in Malaysia. Badlisyah says, Young talent
have lots of opportunities to be productive
and grow, with more freedom to start things
from scratch. Conventional finance processes
are there already but talent can delve deeper,
learning to build up the business as opposed
to merely doing the business. Thats the
advantage the Islamic finance industry offers
in the war for talent.
He advises fresh grads to create opportunities
for themselves. Enter the industry and find
ways to create and deliver value as part of the
new organisation. Whether its Islamic finance
or whatever you do, you will succeed in your
career if you aspire to serve and do things
with passion. If you focus mainly on money,

IN A POSTGRADUATE TALENT
A well-rounded postgraduate talent is an individual who excels both academically
and non-academically, says Prof Dato Dr Mohd Amin, Vice Chancellor of Universiti
Malaya. In this interview, he expands on what he believes are the key traits one
should possess to be successful in their postgraduate study.

K
nowing your subject matter well is
a strong indication that you have an
upper hand when it comes to pursuing
a postgraduate programme but hitting the
books is not the only criteria when it comes
to excelling. In fact, more and more higher
education institutions are interested in what
they coin as well-rounded postgraduate
talent. What exactly does this entail?
We pose the question to someone who is
well-versed in this area, Prof Dato Dr Mohd
Amin, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, to
get his take on it. His answer? A well-rounded
postgraduate talent usually possesses both
academic and non-academic knowledge
and skills excellence. Engagement in
classroom learning, research training in lab
work, participating and presenting papers in
seminars and conferences are all essential
for postgraduate students to acquire the
academic experience needed to complete
their studies. However, to complement their
academic experience, an informal educational
experience through volunteerism work or
employment in part-time jobs are important
avenues for them to enhance their soft skills
for their future in the working world.
On top of the above, Dr Mohd Amin strongly
advocates for self-learning and critical
thinking skills as he says the two will provide
a postgraduate talent with an extra edge over
their peers. These are important in terms of
possesing knowledge in different fields and
world-view perspectives that will contribute
to them being well-rounded postgraduate
students, says Dr Mohd Amin.
Sticking close to this belief, Universiti Malaya
has taken considerable measures to ensure
that their postgraduate students possess
the right skills and knowledge. Among them
includes making sure that their postgraduate
programmes are framed around the seven
domains of learning outcomes. These are
knowledge of discipline areas, practical
skills, social skills and responsibility, values,

an informal educational experience through
volunteerism work or employment in part-time jobs
are important avenues for them to enhance their
soft skills for their future in the working world.
attitude and professionalism, communication,
leadership and team skills, problem-solving
and scientific skills and last but not least,
information management and life-long
learning skills.
Further explaining the domains and how
they are incorporated into the programmes
at Universiti Malaya, Dr Mohd Amin says,
Particularly for research postgraduate
students, all these learning outcomes are
assessed through their engagement in
the research methodology class, proposal
seminar/candidature defence, community
engagement, lab demonstration, presentation
at conferences as well as from the publication
and thesis produced.
In terms of Malaysias progress as a nation of
well-rounded postgraduate talent, Dr Mohd
Amin believes the country is on the right track,
thanks to individual efforts by the institutions
as well as governmental initiatives such as
MyBrain15 (a scholarship programme that

aims to increase the number of professionals
with a postgraduate certification in Malaysia.

In fact, through MyBrain15, more than 40,000
students have received scholarship offers as
of December 2015, says Dr Mohd Amin. This
year, another 20,000 scholarships will be
offered to students with 15,000 scholarships
targeted for students under the MyMaster
programme and 5,000 for those under the
MyPhD programme.
These numbers are a sure sign that more
and more Malaysians have come to realise
the advantages a postgraduate certificate
can have on their career progress. But more
importantly, it is also a positive sign that the
government itself is embracing its promise
of delivering Malaysia as a highly-skilled,
highly-knowledgeable nation to competitively
participate and contribute to the larger global
scheme of things.

Dr Mohd Amin is encouraged by these efforts,
saying that in the long run, it will benefit
the nation as a whole. We have seen the
intiative from the Malaysian government
to develop a pool of talented, high-calibre
intellectuals in the country with the objective
to spur the growth of research and innovation
with the creation of MyBrain15 sponsorship
programme for postgraduate studies. This
programme created under the 10th Malaysia
Plan aims to produce 60,000 PhD holders
among the Malaysian citizen by the year 2023.
Further effort to develop the postgraduate
talent by the government is through the
Industrial PhD programme that focuses
on industry-based professionals and
practitioners with the aim to produce and
enhance competitiveness and innovation
through industry-based research. This
programme encourages knowledge-sharing
or technology transfer between the industry
and the university in order to produce highly
knowledgeable professionals, says Dr Mohd
Amin.
While the government has incentives and
programmes readily available for potential
postgraduate talent to further their studies,
it is up to the talent themselves to push
further to achieve success. With this in mind,
Dr Mohd Amin says that postgraduate talent
need to instill in themselves several traits: I
believe a postgraduate talent needs to be
self-motivated, focused and passionate in

pursuing their masters or PhD education.
They need to develop transferable skills
outside the academic environment. Apart
from knowledge acquisition, Dr Mohd Amin
says it is also important for a postgraduate
talent to work on their social and community
engagement skills.
We also turned to Dr Mohd Amin for some

any years ago, most undergraduate
students could only dream to

with a silver spoon in their mouths may have
had the opportunity to do so immediately
after graduation. The less lucky ones would
have to put their dreams on hold and join the
workforce in order to support themselves, as
well as their family. But over the years, the
number of postgraduate students in Malaysia
has grown significantly with the help of funds
from the government and private institutions,
and this growth is expected to hit a target of
60,000 PhD graduates by the year 2023.

for local students who would like to pursue
their masters degree or PhD. The sponsorship
pays for their fees for masters programme
and includes a monthly allowance, as well as
other incentives for PhD students, says Prof

students, UPM collaborated with professors
from United Kingdom, Australia and New
Zealand for their learning support programme

support programme, the university is able to
help students acquire important skills such
as communication, leadership, teamwork,
creative and critical thinking, problem solving,
emotional intelligence, as well as moral and
professional ethics.

THE WELL-ROUNDED POSTGRADUATE
Universities today strive to make sure their
students are well-rounded. At UPM for
example, they created a programme called
Putra Sarjana where students are trained to
adapt, and encouraged to be knowledgeable
and not to focus only on one aspect. Dr Aini
shares, We do all sorts of programmes to
encourage students to open up to other
aspects, and technology has allowed these
students to expand further. Nowadays we see
cross-disciplinary and we have a committee
of supervisors from diferrent aspects of
a particular research topic who will have
discussions that provoke questions to the
students.
Dr Aini defines a well-rounded postgraduate
talent as someone who is knowledgeable
about the subject as a whole, and not
specifically on the item that is being
researched. The knowledge is very important
and we expect them to know many other
things besides the research they are doing.
For example, a student who is working on
the Newcastle Disease virus in the PhD

programme must know the fundamentals
of virology. So depending on the aspect of
the particular work, the student will have to
know about virology, which means everything
about viruses and not just a particular virus.
The student must also know how this virus
affects other lives and activities. For PhD
students, their careers do not focus on just
one particular area. The knowledge that they
have should allow them to go anywhere in a
broad sense of the degree that they pursued,
says Dr Aini.
As reflected in our learning support
programme, we ensure that our students
are versatile and independent learners who
are capable to creatively and critically create
opportunities through the strengths that
they have developed as highly-educated
individuals, other than gaining skills in their
areas of specialisation, she adds.
Besides making sure their students are well-
rounded, UPM also ensures that their students
do not spend too much time unnecessarily in
completing their programme of study, be it at
the masters or PhD level. The university has
taken initial steps to ensure their students
graduate on time (GOT), consistent with the
Ministry of Higher Educations policy regarding

graduation. The unnecessary time spent is not
only a disadvantage to students, but to the
university and the nation as well. Effective
time management saves cost and the sooner
a student graduates, the sooner he is able to
contribute to the society through his acquired
specialisations and other skills learned at the
university.
Dr Aini further stresses that those who are
thinking of doing a postgraduate study should
start thinking and making plans of what
they would like to achieve on their journey.
It is important for students to consider the
university where they will continue their higher
degree, whether the university will be able to
assist them in the area they want to pursue.
They should also consider opportunities
for fundings, co-curricular, cultural and
intellectual activities offered, as well as the
learning support infrastructures the university
has, she advises. Potential postgraduate
students should also consider the plans
they have after graduation, and whether the
university will be able to help them further
in their careers, such as the availability of
postdoctoral fellowship positions. These are
the aspects every student should consider, of
which UPM offers entirely.

and career. He feels as a country, we are on
the right path when it comes to developing

universities are offering applied hands-

than theory and fundamental research, he
says. He feels a more practical approach is
important as the students need to apply what

postgraduate qualification. So you will need a
high level of commitment in order to maintain
a study-life balance. Even if you have the
luxury of solely concentrating on the degree,

Prof Dr Patrick Kee Peng Kong, Acting Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor
for Academics of SEGi University, shares how the nations largest private higher

SEGi University & Colleges (SEGi) has come
a long way since its early days as Systematic
College in 1977. With a reputable track record

These intelligent, high achievers are strongly
independent people who work hard with
minimal supervision and coaching. They are
also self-driven, have inquisitive minds and
adept learning skills; disciplined enough to do
research on their own, delving deeper into the
subject.
MBA students are more matured and may
take time to gain momentum. They prefer a
mix of research and course work as most
MBA students tend to be successful mid
to senior level managers who wish to gain a
sense of self-satisfaction. They usually do
course work and an R&D proposal guided
by lecturers and supervisors. There are also
MBA students who choose to do it fully by

course work, undertaking a 20,000 to 30,000
word dissertation on a project related to their
individual work.
The professor says most postgraduate
students generally have mid to slightly higher
IQ. Researchers and academicians will go
for PhD while those who want to continue
working will choose the MBA route, focusing
on a specific field of their choice.
THE MALAYSIAN SCENARIO
In terms of developing postgraduate talent,
Malaysia has a long way to go compared to
countries like the UK and Australia. Prof Dr
Kee says, We are 10 years behind established
universities in the UK and Australia. Established
local universities such as Universiti Malaya
and Universiti Sains Malaysia have a 50/50
mix, with more postgraduate programmes
now in their bid to score a higher ranking in
world ranking systems such as QS Ranking
and Times Higher Education Ranking.

Private universities here are more focused on
undergraduate programmes and are still very
new in that area. We need a sizeable faculty,
long history and respected track record. Thats
why selected public universities do better
compared to private university players.
Still, SEGi has some positive achievements in
this area, which includes producing the first
DBA graduate last year and several thousand
MBA students. SEGi recently began offering
its franchised MBA to Hanoi Open University
its first overseas venture with 100 students
registered.
To ensure students graduate with the right
skills and knowledge for the market and to
develop the academic world further, Prof
Dr Kee says, Students have to do an oral
presentation based on their written project
paper to a panel of accessors, to ascertain
they know the subject well. The panel will
ask each student to do a 15 to 20 minute
presentation then question them, to help
students build up their self-confidence. Some
foreign students struggle through it but our
language department help them prepare and
work on their presentation skills.
If they are not convincing in the first oral
assessment, we give them another months
time to prepare as a recourse. Students

good presentation skills in life.

postgraduate students and talent need to
work on acquiring entrepreneurial skills apart
from knowledge acquisition. Postgraduate
talent should possess strong analytical and
research skills but not many are capable of
doing R&D, to simplify information and present
an in-depth study to convince management.
Youd have to be very thorough but most
people lack training in doing research. It takes
about a few years to develop reasoning and
analytical skills like those of an engineer.
We are going to invest more in the Institute of
Graduate Studies in the long haul. Since 20 per
cent of our faculty staff already obtained their
PhD, we aim to increase that to 30 per cent in
three years time. We also target to have 1,700
to 1,800 MBA students in three years time
from our current pool of 1,200 students.

the way for this.

school that creates value for Malaysians with
postgraduate qualifications and can raise their
game as individuals in the global marketplace.
Dr Md Zabid is thinking of a school in the
tradition of the Harvard Business School or
Kellogg or Wharton, or even the Indian School
of Business in Hyderabad but with distinctive
Malaysian qualities that make such a school
valuable to the countrys higher-education
industry. Its a noble vision that recognises
human beings as a national asset but Dr Md
Zabid is acutely conscious of the reality and
he wants to talk about it.
The truth is we are unable to provide great
salaries to people with postgrad qualifications
because the industry has not really put a
high value on it. Thats why many Malaysians

hesitate to invest in quality postgrad education.
They feel they are not likely to be rewarded
for it. Worse, when they approach employers,
some HR people cant even differentiate
postgrad degrees between the many kinds of
business schools.
An MBA from a top international business
school can cost anything from RM100,000 to
RM300,000 depending on where you go and
your lifestyle. Thats a hefty investment by any
measure, which a young Malaysian cannot
recoup at the workplace unless he or she
inherites a large business or is able to create
an instantly successful one. When you return,
can you get a job that pays a salary worthy of
your investment? There are very few jobs in
Malaysia that will, says Dr Md Zabid.
Its this scenario that spurred the Malaysian
Ministry of Higher Education to start MyBrain15,
an incentive programme to encourage
postgrad education. Its targets have been
realistically lowered over time. Given the high

cost between choosing a postgrad degree or
buying a home, what do you think a Malaysian
executive would do? Meanwhile, Malaysia has
acute shortage of people with specialised
education in many fields of study. There is
a gap in local talent due to the reliance on
foreign talent and services in many sectors.
SETTING STANDARDS
Thats why Dr Md Zabid is raising the bar for
UNIRAZAKs programmes. By linking degrees
to certifications from professional bodies,
newly minted graduates will arrive at the
workplace strengthened by an additional
commercially valuable layer. For example,
UNIRAZAK MBAs will be linked with the
Chartered Institute of Management of the UK.
The new MBAs can be certified as chartered
managers, making them attractive in the job
market. Other programmes like taxation,
insurance and Islamic finance are also linked
with relevant professional bodies.
UNIRAZAK is the only Malaysian university
that embeds a professional certification into
its degrees. We want to produce graduates
that the industry wants and who are ready for
the market, says Dr Md Zabid. We want to
create value, enhance their incomes and their
roles in the industry. The other dimension is
raising every students exposure by way of
internships, attachments, roundtables and
classroom teaching by practitioners. This has
a direct beneficial impact on the student, says
Dr Md Zabid. This exposure is what changes
mindsets.

CHANGING TRADITIONS
Historically, our legacy is British where
traditionally a bachelors degree is where
your education terminates. In the old days,
a professor at a British university might only
have a bachelors degree but would have
vast experience and numerous publications
that are counted as a body of knowledge.
Today, however, the American view is more
influential that a bachelors degree is the
beginning, a very basic platform upon which
further degrees or qualifications are earned
and become essential to your career or
speciality. So a PhD would be necessary but
not a sufficient condition to be a professor.
The thinking has shifted, even in the UK, and
worldwide, where postgraduate qualifications
are seen as the consolidation of experience,
specialist knowledge and strategic thinking of
an individual.
Thats why there is a demand for postgraduate
degrees and there are many schools offering
them. An estimated one million Malaysians
are in tertiary education right now. About 10
per cent are in masters programme and five
per cent are in doctoral programmes. In the
university sector, about 20,000 are holders of
a masters degree. Over 100,000 Malaysians
have some kind of postgrad qualifications and
the highest concentration is an MBA.
Malaysians use three pathways to
postgraduate degrees, says Dr Md Zabid.
Local, foreign and, of course, the easy
pathway, buying a degree. While we quietly
snigger and say its not counted, note that
these degrees appear on name cards and on
job applications. Some HR people cant tell
the difference.
Typically, easy postgrad degrees are acquired
by paying fees, doing a limited number of
courses, reading case studies and accepting
the maturity and experience of the individual.
The result is varying degrees of quality, or the
absence of quality, but the tragic part is when
an employer cant really make a distinction
between degrees, says Dr Md Zabid. There
are an estimated 100 MBA providers here. Its
hard to differentiate between a high quality
MBA and one that is less competitive. So
its wise to choose your postgrad school
carefully and ensure that it has good alumni
networking.

And sometimes, there is a worrying
disconnection. I find Malaysians with a basic
degree in one field and a postgrad degree in
a field that doesnt lend career value, says Dr
Md Zabid. It appears no one has counselled
them. We keep hearing that Malaysians with
a basic degree in shariah have poor career
prospects but send them for an MBA and
they will become very valuable to the Islamic
finance and banking sector.
Altogether, it would seem that Malaysia needs
a major mindset change. My big concern is
that we are viewed as a country that does not
create value for postgrads, says Dr Md Zabid.
Thailand has a better reputation. India, even
more so. Institutions like the Indian School of
Business in Hyderabad and the Indian Institute
of Management in Ahmedabad have changed
the landscape for Asian postgrad education in
business.
Still, all of this is meaningful only when
the local industry appreciates the role of a
postgraduate education and is willing to invest
in it. Im tired of hearing the industry saying
that once theyve educated an employee, that
employee will run off to the competitor, says

Dr Md Zabid. Surely that can be managed. In
Malaysia we have many businessmen who
know how to do business well but wont do
R&D. They buy expensive houses (worth
millions of RM) but wont invest in product
quality or development. Sometimes, even
their products get banned in later years. It
frustrates me that there are many luxury cars
on the road but businessmen are not willing to
invest in postgrad education. We have to ask
ourselves if we believe in our own people.
Few industry players have significant research
and development (R&D) centres its one of
the reasons postgrads are not of great value
to the private sector and typically find better
prospects in the public sector. This means

Asia College, better known as BAC,
at a young age of 24. Today, the institute

According to Raja Singham, a well-rounded

major characteristics, which are technical

right technical knowledge in the field theyre
in is a given as it can be acquired through an
educational institution, but sometimes this
knowledge may not be practical to a talent if
they lack the necessary soft skills.

We may find someone who does a fantastic
job and excels in the technical aspects within
an organisation, but performance is restricted
because he is lacking in other skills. A well-
rounded person should have the ability to
communicate and interact with others, deliver
a presentation, go out and represent the
company, as well as represent himself well
within the company and have strong research
skills.
Like in BAC for example, we run many
different companies that involve people
going out to gather information and analyse
the information in order to decide if the
entity is worth investing in. We have to do
research on the market, the competitors
and the alternatives, and write a report that
sums up the findings of the research before
communicating the findings of the report to
the board. Hence a well-rounded talent is very
much needed, says Raja Singham.
He adds that there is less of a hierarchy in
organisations today. Therefore, the talent
must be able to be team players. Employees
have to learn to be leaders while management
have to learn to listen and be open to ideas
from their subordinates as trends change
and business strategies that have worked in

the past may not be applicable for a current
market trend.
In BAC, our organisational structure is pretty
flat. Each of our 15 different companies have
a CEO, but most of the time our teams are
known as product teams or project teams.
Its very different from the old days. Today,
there are cases where I would go in as a team
leader, and the are also cases where I would
go in as a team member while someone else
is leading the project. Thats where I get to play
the role of a listener, which is hard for people
like us (who are leaders) sometimes but this
allows others to show their potential, explains
Raja Singham.
With the ample resources that Malaysia has,
the country is capable of building a well-
educated nation with global graduates, but
Raja Singham claims that bureaucracy and the
enforcement of rules that are too literal and
sometimes lack common sense are setting
the country back. Despite having a great
blueprint for its education system, Malaysia
may not survive the test of time if they do not
adapt to change.

education system because things havent
changed. Even in America, the teaching and
assessment methods have yet to change and
its the same in Malaysia. Today, its no longer
a trend where one who has an accounting
degree stays as an accountant for the rest
of his career. People are going to change as
society changes because they need to remain
relevant.
We need things to be done quickly, which
is why one of the things Im looking at is a
converted masters. For example, with a law
degree I could study to be an accountant
in one year, or to be an English teacher in
one year. But the problem we have with the
ministry is the set rule where you can do a
Masters in Information Technology only if
you had pursued a bachelors in the same
field. This shows that the ministry is ignoring
the very fact of whats happening in the
world today, where a lot of the graduates are
working in fields that arent related to what
theyve studied, Raja Singham comments.
Futurist and philosopher, Alvin Toffler once
wrote, The illiterate of the 21st century will
not be those who cannot read and write, but
those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
With vast information available in this age of
technology, people can become redundant
and irrelevant as quickly as things change,
but the willingness to learn separates them
from the rest of the pack. There is a need
to increase the number of people with that
hunger for knowledge in order to compete
with other nations in the world. But according
to Raja Singham, Malaysia is not there yet.
Trends aside, selecting the right postgraduate
programme is also important as it can be
a costly mistake, especially if it doesnt
contribute to ones career advancement. The
reason to pursue a postgraduate programme
should be more than just wanting to have a
nice title printed on the business card. Which
is why it is rather important for one to have
a career goal before selecting the field to
pursue when deciding on a postgraduate
programme.

You shouldnt do a postgraduate qualification
just for the sake of having a postgraduate
qualification. Ask yourself what are your career
aspirations? Find out and understand why
you want to do it career prospects, better
remuneration package, picking up new skill
sets that are needed. Set your career goals
and then choose the right one based on your
requirements, Raja Singham advises.
Taking a law graduate as an example, he
explains, After completing their bachelors
they should think why they would want to
pursue a Master in Law before jumping into it.
If they would want to teach law, then yes, thats
the right path, or if they want to specialise in a
specific area. But if not, then its not a good
reason to do it. It has to have some added
value to their career journey, like an MBA,
which allows them to learn the business side

of things and it would come in handy if they
have any plans to set up a law firm. I would
advise them to do their homework, reflect
and think. Where are they heading, which
qualification will help them the most, which
type of teaching structure is most suitable for
them and how relevant and up-to-date the
syllabus is. Its important consider all these
factors.
Summing up, Raja Singham stresses that
graduates should look into the job market
as well. Pursuing a masters in a certain field
doesnt guarantee one a job if there is no
demand for such talent in the market. Hence,
it is important for graduates to look around,
see where the vacancies are and survey their
options, before ending up with a very costly
mistake.

Kijang, Kuala Lumpur, Charles Fine,
Dean of Asia School of Business, shares
his passion and enthusiasm for the inaugural
MBA they are about to roll out. Having taught
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) in the United States for the last 30 years,
he has been tasked with setting up Asia
School of Business in Malaysia. Its an exciting
time in education indeed. We are all about
developing transformative and principled
leaders. We believe the business world needs
this talent, he says.

industry, the customers, the supply chain

We want people who make things happen,
says Fine. Well-rounded individuals, but also
with qualities that make them stand out. Talent
is of utmost importance, as well as a strong
work ethic. We want independent thinkers,
with both high levels of IQ and EQ, he says.

interest, from Malaysian candidates as well as
candidates from surrounding regions. We are
very happy with the quality of candidates we
have seen, both from Malaysia and other parts
of the world, says Fine.
The programme is immersive, with residential
facilities near the campus. Except for
candidates with families and kids, everyone
is expected to stay at the residence. When
you get a group of people taking on this
challenging task, and theyre studying,
working, staying together, it will be very
focused. After class, youre discussing your
lessons with your coursemates. When youre
in work placement, you have a support
group. Were hoping itll be a very conducive
environment for learning, he says.

His advice to those looking to embark on this
challenge? Get some sleep! he says with a
laugh. Come with an open mind and come
with a willingness to learn. You probably have
to leave any preconceived notions at the
door. Education and learning is about revising
your notions, and were here to support you
in that. Youll also be studying, working and
living alongside a diverse mix of talent, so
youll see different ways of thinking and varied
approaches to a problem. We say thats the
best way to broaden your horizons and take
on new knowledge and experience.
Which brings us back to the kind of leaders
we want to produce. A leader who has a
breadth and depth of experience will be able
to transform companies and possibly the
whole industry. Our corporate partners include
social enterprises, big listed companies, start-
ups and more. With this variety, students get
to see how things are done differently in vastly
different scenarios. They will then be able
to take that knowledge and apply it in their
fields. Whether or not it works, they will have
the skills to adapt and apply, or discard and
move on. That is how transformation begins,

here are various financial aid options
available for Malaysian students who
are looking to pursue their postgraduate
studies, which vary depending on their needs
and field of study, as well as whether they
will pursue their postgraduate at a public or
private institution.
Students can apply for fellowships, which are
essentially scholarships that will cover either
the partial or full cost of study. The grant is
awarded either by the university or external
institutions and can be used to cover various
costs such as tuition, housing, books, etc.
Assistantships, on the other hand, are usually
sponsored by the institution that the student
has chosen to study in. In exchange for the
funds, the student is usually required to carry
out work on campus relating to their field of
study.
Some of the more commonly available
funding options are as follows:
UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS
Many universities award partial or full
scholarships to students with an excellent
track record or who demonstrate outstanding
academic potential. These funds are from
the universitys own coffers, donated by
individuals, corporate sponsors, philanthropists
and wealthy alumni members.
Local research universities, such as University
of Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia
(USM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM),
award financial assistance to all qualified
Malaysian graduates to further their
postgraduate studies, especially those who
are pursuing their PhDs. The award usually
covers tuition fees for the entire duration of the
masters or PhD programme, plus a monthly
allowance or stipend. The details are available
on the respective universitys website.
EDUCATION MATTERS
TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS
Teaching assistantships come with full or
partial tuition benefits as well as a competitive
hourly wage, allowing postgraduate students
to earn some money while studying. This
arrangement is especially ideal for recipients
who are interested in teaching or in pursuing a
doctorate, as it is a great way to gain classroom
experience.
The recipient is usually required to teach
undergraduate courses, grade papers,
compile bibliographies, lead discussion
sessions or tutorials, and supervise laboratory
sessions. On the flipside, this type of work can
be very time-consuming as the recipient is
expected to maintain office hours in addition
to completing their postgraduate course.
RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
This type of scholarship is usually funded
by supervisors, project leaders or heads of
research within the university. In return for
tuition benefits, the recipient is required to
work with the faculty on the research project
for which the grant has been awarded,
including publishing research work in
academic journals or conducting research
projects for the institution.

holders by 2023, and is open to those
studying in both public and private
universities in Malaysia. There are three
different schemes under the programme
MyMaster, MyPhD and Industrial PhD.

these schemes, with the Industrial PhD
being targeted at employees of private
companies that are directly involved in
research and development, innovation and
in increasing the industrys competitiveness.

Technology & Innovation (MOSTI), this
scholarship is awarded to students to
pursue full-time postgraduate research-
based studies in specific areas related
to science and technology, at local

agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and so on.
About 400 NSF scholarships are awarded
each year by MOSTI, and the scholarship
covers tuition fees and examination fees,
plus a monthly allowance of RM1,560
for masters candidates or RM2,300 for

I decided to embark on my postgraduate
studies because I wanted to learn more about
the business side of things to complement
my technical experience. When it came
down to choosing the right course, I based
it on reputation, price, location, duration as
well as the type of assessment. I wanted a
combination of exams and projects, and did
not want my course to be just fully project-
assessed.
There was a team-building programme at
the beginning emphasising that it would help
if participants worked together during the
programme. There was an introduction to
finance for non-finance participants, giving the
basics of financial calculations, which were in
the practice essential to non-finance people.
We set up study groups that met weekly. My
course focused on the usual core subjects for
an MBA. My personal favourite was Strategic
Management. The IT focus was to do with the
implementation of IT to help with the business
aspect.
Looking back, I think the most challenging
part of the programme was time. There was
the need to balance between personal life
and the course. The fact that assessments
were by exams and projects both group and
individual meant there was little free time.
Coping was the tough part. My family needed
to understand that I would have to have a lot
of time on my own to complete the projects
and studies.
The most rewarding part of the programme?
Finishing it! Especially the finance-related
subjects. There was the feeling of self-
accomplishment. The best lesson I took away
from my experience was definitely having the
knowledge of the business aspect of work
and applying strategies to business.
My advice? Choose wisely part-time or
full time. Choose when to start it, whether
immediately after your undergraduate
studies or after working for a few years. My
personal choice was after working so that
it would be easier to understand the MBA
subjects with application in real life. But on
the other hand, taking it immediately after
your undergraduate studies possibly before
starting your working life would mean that
you have more time but at the cost of not
earning for a while longer!

It has always been my dream to take on
postgraduate studies. It was also mainly due
to my work and the family business. I picked
my course because of its price, reputation
and mainly the location. Moreover, the classes
were during the weekends.
At the beginning, I was struggling; the first
semester was very difficult! But I had an
excellent support team in the college and
we somehow helped each other with our
assignments. Definitely, being a working adult
made it challenging as well, especially where
time was concerned. But it was rewarding
because of the knowledge I gained as well as
the friends I made.
Through my experience, I learnt that life
is full of challenges but if we are focused,
many things can be achieved. Which is how
I approached my postgraduate studies. My
advice? Taking on a postgraduate study can
be a very good experience and you will gain a
lot as well as learn new things. Especially if you
have a good set of classmates from different
backgrounds. I had a very interesting doctor,
a general practitioner, in my course and we

on quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Initially, you feel like a young student again
but this time round you spend more time with
classmates who are working professionals.
You are expected to know the theories and

them yourself. During class, you are expected
to learn through real-live cases and the
programme requires students to participate
through group activities such as discussions
and public speaking.
Time management was definitely the hardest
part of the programme. It was a challenge
to have a full-time job as well as having to

monthly basis. I made a conscious decision
to set aside time for my study. This meant
blocking out the classroom schedule way in

easier said than done!
But you definitely discover a lot about yourself
what you are good at doing, what topics you
lean in naturally and how to work with others.
The programme helped a lot in developing
my mental stamina.

systems in the world. Lets explore the French affair.

his year, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
released the QS Best Student Cities
index that showcases the top urban
destinations for international students based
on a diverse range of indicators grouped
into five key categories: University rankings,
affordability, student mix, desirability and
employer activity. Paris tops the overall
rankings, putting France in the limelight.
Unlike Australia, the United Kingdom and the
United States, France has not aggressively
marketed its education sector in the past
despite always being recognised as a centre
of academic excellence. In 1998, the French
government introduced a vigorous support
policy to welcome foreign students into
French educational institutions including
modifying the policy of visas awarded to

contribute to its simplification and to give
priority to all students.
So if you want an affordable education in a
high-quality institution, learn the beautiful
language of French, and get to grips with the
nations famed art de vivre, then get ready to
say oui to an education in France.
OVERVIEW
France has a dual system for higher education
known as universits and the prestigious
grandes coles (elite schools), which requires
students to go through a very competitive
selection entry exam. It makes up only five
per cent of the total number of students in the
country. The grandes coles system concerns
mostly science and business studies, and
there are no grandes coles for medical and
law studies, but universities have developed
selection systems in the course of the studies.
Very few countries invest as much in research
and education nowadays, and France is proud
to be one of them, ensuring its strong academic
and artistic tradition continue in the modern
day. Education is the largest category of the
French governments spending, accounting
for more than 20 per cent of the budget. As
a result, a total of 41 French universities were
included in the QS World University Rankings
2015/16 11 sitting within the global top 250.

cole Polytechnique ParisTech lead the pack,
ranking 23rd and 40th respectively.
Students attending universities in France have
an option to a full-time or part-time programme
with a number of class schedules and
courses available. Although the courses and
times may vary depending on the institution,
it is easy for students to find something that
accommodates their schedule and allows
them to go to university in their own time.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Students from all across Europe came to
France to study since the Middle Ages. La
Sorbonne the first French University was
established more than 800 years ago to offer
education especially in the areas of theology,
medicine and law. Today, nuclear, space and
aviation teaching are very popular in France
because of the technology they have to offer.

following years are highly competitive and
often hard to attain. But students who make
it through can be sure to have an amazing
experience.

AFFORDABILITY
If youre looking for a high-quality institution
at an affordable cost, France would be the
right direction to head to as the tuition fees
at leading universities in the country are
among the lowest in the world, with fees
varying from about 150 Euros (RM686) to
900 Euros (RM4,133) per term for domestic
and international students alike. This is
probably due to the fact that in order to make
education in France more affordable, the
French government offsets some of the costs
of attending university in the country.
Public universities in France have variable
figures when it comes to tuition fees,
depending on the chosen level of study. For
Bachelor programmes, the average tuition fee
is 190 Euros (RM869) per year, but engineering
degrees have higher tuition fees of around
620 Euros (RM2,836) per academic year and
the average tuition fees for medicine studies
can lead to 452 Euros (RM2,068) per year.
Same goes for masters and PhD
programmes. The average fees for a masters
and PhD programme average at about 260
Euros (RM1,189) and 396 Euros (RM1,811)

respectively, but you should expect higher
fees for certain specialised degrees.
Highly selective grandes coles and
grandes tablissements (great schools and
establishments) have a set fees of about
500 Euros (RM2,287) to 600 Euros (RM2,744)
per year while private universities annual
tuition fees would cost between 1,500 Euros
(RM6,861) and 6,000 Euros (RM27,444).
LIFE IN FRANCE
The StudyPortals International Student
Satisfaction Awards 2014 recognises France as
the favourite amongst international students
when it comes to deciding a good place for
an international study experience. A total of
787 comments were given by 329 reviewers
on SteXX.eu (a website dedicated to sharing
international study experiences and reviews)
about what it was like to study in the country
and overall, France received an average rating
of 8.3 out of 10.
Students attending university in France are
exposed to amazing French culture in an
interactive environment that brings together
students from all over the globe. Universities

organise shows and hold conferences,
seminars, parties as well as sporting and other
outdoor activities that is part and parcel of a
students lifestyle. While the activities may
differ depending on the university, they are
organised with the same objective to allow
their students to have a good time throughout
the learning process. It is through these
activities where youll be able to broaden your
circle of friends to a diverse group of people,
allowing you to learn and grow as a person.
There is never a dull day in the life of a student
in France, especially with the wide array of
activities to choose from. Aside from having
more than 2,000 cinemas scattered across
the country, France also boasts an impressive
number of museums offering everything from
history to modern art and even science that
you can visit regardless of the university you
attend in the country. Many of these museums
can be accessed for free, which is certainly a
bonus to college students who are more often
than not on a tight budget.
Your time in France may pass in a blink of an
eye and it would be a waste to not indulge
your taste buds on famous French cuisine.
Dining in a prestigious restaurant might cost
more than what your budget allows but there
are quaint cafs and ptisserie serving food
that would be a treat to your palate as well as
your pocket.

OTHER PRACTICAL MATTERS

Cost of Living: To live comfortably as a student in France, it is estimated to cost as

little as 430 Euros (RM1,974) a month, depending on which area of the country youll
be. But of course it doesnt hurt to have more. The Carte de sjour is a law in France
that allows foreign students to work part-time up to 20 hours per week while studying
in the country with no further work permit required. This will help with that extra pocket
money you might need for additional revision materials, entertainment and such to
make your stay in the country more enjoyable.

Scholarships: There are a number of grants and scholarships available including

French government grants, grants by the government of a native country or aid
from international and non-governmental organisations, although the options for
international students are much less. These grants and scholarships cover partial or
full expenses of attending college, but the lower cost of attending university in France
as compared to other countries in Europe helps make up for the lack of available
financial aid.

Application Procedures: Malaysian students who would like to study in France

can apply via application forms found on the website of the college of their choice.
Print and fill up the form, and mail it to the college with documentations required
to be considered for admission into the college, including a copy of your passport,
a passport-sized photograph, as well as proof that you have a visa if your course is
longer than three months. A proof of English proficiency (TOEFL) is also required.
Some colleges may require a written essay to support your application.

Visa Requirements: If youre attending a programme that is longer than 90 days,

you need to apply for an extended-stay visa with residency permit (VLS-TS) from
the French consular authority with your intention to attend college in France as the
desired reason for the visa. Make sure you have all the documents that are needed
and submit them with the application as well as the payment. Do this as quickly as
possible as it can take up to two months for a visa application to be approved.

stressful period in life. Find out how you can manage the
postgraduate stress before it consumes you.

ouve put in hours of research, thinking
and writing. Youre trying your best to
catch up on assignments, readings and
group meetings. What may seem like a long
time more to go is now slowly catching up on
you and youre still nowhere near completing
your thesis! The natural reaction is to get
stressed. Which is not exactly a bad thing
because stress can be a great motivator if you
need that extra push. But if it starts affecting
the rest of your life, then it is time to get a grip
on it before stress overwhelms and consumes
you. We all know the consequences of not
handling stress effectively fatigue, lack of
concentration, feeling of hopelessness, and
the list goes on. So here are five tips on how
you can deal with postgraduate stress before
it gets to you.
HAVE A PLAN
The one reason you could be stressed? Poor
organisation and bad time management. Not
keeping track on the things you need to do
or how long you should take to complete
something will naturally put you in a panic
mode when you start to realise times up
and youve not done anything at all. So first
things first get a grip on your priorities. Plan
accordingly know what you have to do,
estimate how long it will take, know how long
you have to do it in and plan out a schedule
or a timetable so that you can be on top of

One thing to remember: You have to be
realistic. Dont take on too much than what
you can actually cope with. If even setting a

need to do, then perhaps it is because you
really have too much on your plate! If that is
the case, speak to your professor or supervisor
to see if you can work something out.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Who has time for rest and relaxation when
there are 101 things to do? You thats who.
Set some time even an hour during the
weekend to unwind and relax. Do something
you enjoy reading a book, listening to music,
getting a spa treatment anything at all to
take your mind off your studies for a while.
This helps to clear your head and calm those
nerves so that you can re-evaluate and focus
your attention on what you need to do.
EAT WELL
There is some truth in the saying, You are what
you eat. When stressed, we are more likely
to reach out to salty, sugary and fatty food
basically junk that will throw your body into a
bigger havoc when combined with stressed.
Youre inclined to snack especially when faced
with mentally draining coursework. Why not

he Master of Petroleum Engineering
programme complements a full range
of undergraduate and postgraduate
engineering programmes offered by the
Faculty of Engineering and Science, which has
over 2,000 students studying a range of major
engineering programmes including Applied

This is a masters conversion course aimed
primarily at engineers who do not have any
formal qualifications in petroleum engineering,
but have honours degrees in other relevant
engineering disciplines. It is also available to
graduates from other disciplines who have

The first semester offers units such as
applied geology and geophysics; phase
behaviour and flow assurance; formation

and well stimulation remedial and intervention
operations. Hydrocarbon economics and

Having studied the Master of Engineering
Technology in Green and Energy Efficient
Buildings (MGEEB) with highly qualified
lecturers and professionals assigned from
Germany, I have learned a lot of new ideas,
approaches and technologies in designing
a smart (mampan) building. I believe with
the knowledge I gained I can contribute
a lot in saving government funds in the

The most memorable moment was during
my internship with a Rosenheim-based
utility company for four months where I

MUs MSc Molecular Medicine Programme
is designed to cater for medical or basic
sciences graduates seeking advanced
training in cellular and molecular biology,
genetics as well as drug development and
treatment. The programme prepares students
for career opportunities in medically focused
biopharmaceutical and biotechnology
industries, and equips students with enhanced
skills to carry out research at a higher degree
in related fields. The coursework is conducted
in a highly engaging and conducive
environment to stimulate learning experience.
Comprehensive laboratory-based training
is also provided via hypothesis-driven and
disease-oriented research project.

METHOD OF STUDY/DURATION
The programme is modular and runs over
three semesters, which involves an 18-month
course of study at IMU. The programme
consists of two semesters of theory followed
by a third semester of a research project.
Teaching and learning activities such as
lectures, practical sessions, workshops,
assignments, discussions and tutorials will
be held face-to-face and through computer-
aided learning. The programme offers the
option of full-time study over one and half
years, including one year of coursework and
six months of research, or part-time study
over a maximum of four years.

latest scientific developments in molecular
