Jessica,
After reviewing your two resumes, my personal recommendation would be to apply with the
resume from Figure 12-5, which Ive included above. I think you have done a great job displaying your
experiences and skills that the people at Google will find very intriguing. With that being said, there are a
few tweaks that I would suggest that can be completed in 15 minutes or less, which will drastically
improve the calibre of your resume. The first thing that I would suggest is that you change everything to
the same tense. Your use of action words like provided, researched, and served are great and should
be emulated in the section above (where you use compose, coordinate etc.).
Under the special skills section I would rephrase your bullets (as well as rename the section). List
some of the more complicated Adobe software applications such as Premier Pro and Dreamweaver so
they are aware you can do more than use Adobe Reader, I would also suggest you use the word proficient
in spanish as opposed to the speak/write/read you are currently using. Very good to have included real
quantitative results such as served 50 customers daily this shows your employer what you are actually
capable of providing and will set you apart from all the passionate candidates out there.
You had mentioned that you were unsure of what to include alongside your resume application.
Well for starters definitely focus on writing a cover letter as your next step. Figure out exactly what your
employers at Google are looking for and write them a tailored letter about how you can solve their
problems. During the interview bring out something I like to call the briefcase technique would also be
beneficial. Simply put this is taking a current problem you know they have and providing then a tailored
solution and implementation guide displaying how you can fulfill their needs. Other than that I would
suggest that if you have any professional certification for some of the products you use or skills you know
then that can also aid your first impression with your future employer.
Lastly, when you decide to submit your application to IBM, here are a few suggestions to tailor it
to their company. One, of course do some market research and tailor your application to them. But from a
resume standpoint take some of your qualitative skills and make then more quantitative on paper. A
company such as Google will value the good balance between technical and interpersonal skills, but IBM
is a more data driven company. Their industry favors those who arent afraid to get their hands dirty in
data and technical prowess. Make sure to flaunt this side of your personality. Overall great work, Im
proud of you and I wish you the best of luck on your interviews!

Sincerely yours,
Tyler Coatsworth
