and Duration
The lessons objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student
needs; What will the students be able to know/do by the end of the lesson? Include the duration
(number of minutes) you estimate the lesson will take.

Lesson Objective: By the end of the lesson students should know the importance of informational text and
how to identify informational text features. Students should know the main idea of informational text. This
lesson will take approximately 40 minutes to complete. I will be using a childrens Helen Keller biography
book as an example to show the class the text features that were used in the book. Students will be writing
in their writing notebooks what they learn about text features as I am reading. Then students can choose a
nonfiction book of their choice from the classroom library to practice finding text features on their own.
They are to write on notecards what text features they found with a small picture or word example and
definition. Students can search for pictures to place on their notecards on the classroom laptops. They are
to find a picture that will help them remember the different text features. Once all students are finished
with the assignment, they will share one of their notecards to the class. This will then bring the lesson to a
closing. An example of what their notecard should entail is as follows:

Resources and Materials

List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson
- Helen Keller Biography book by E. Hadley (shown to the right)
- Writing utensil
- Writing notebooks
- Notecards
- Classroom laptops
- Glue for placing picture on notecard.
- Markers, colored pencils, or crayons for decorating their notecards

Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and
student learning
Students will be using the classroom laptops to look up pictures they would like to put on their vocabulary
notecards. Having an image can help them remember important words that were in the book. Since there
are a limited amount of classroom laptops, while students are waiting they can chose another
informational text from the classroom library to read silently.

Instructional Input
What knowledge is required for you to impart to students in order for them to achieve the
objective or purpose?
The knowledge that will need to be imparted to the students to complete this lesson is what informational
text features are and what they look like. Students will need to be familiar with this, so they can look
through the non- fiction books of their choosing for text features on their own. Prior to this lesson,
students are already familiar with how to find the main idea in a piece of literature.

Checking for Understanding

How will you monitor students learning? If you are using questioning, provide examples of
questions you will use.
I will monitor student learning by using the Helen Keller book to ask the class questions. I will show the
book on a projector, so students can follow along as I am reading and take notes in their writing notebooks
what we discuss. I will ask questions to the class to check for understanding. Questions may include:

1) How do I know what important words to look for on this page? (possible student answer should be
that there are bolded words on the page, so the author wants us to know that word)
2) What is the sub title on this page?
3) So far, what could we infer the main idea of the story is?
4) Are there any captions you saw while I was reading?

This will allow me to see if students understand what text features are and if they understand what is
happening in the story since that correlates with being able to determine the main idea.

Guided and Independent Practice

If relevant, what activities will the students engage in under close teacher monitoring and
direction? What activities will the students engage in without teacher supervision?
Students will be under my direct supervision as I am reading the Helen Keller book to the class. This is to
ensure that all students are focused and showing me that they are good listeners ready to learn. Students
will not be under my direct supervision while they are finding informational text features on their own.
However, I will be walking around the classroom to ensure student are focused on their work and on the
right track.

Closure
How will you bring the lesson to close? Are there key points of learning you need to review,
clarify, or check? Closure may not be synonymous to an ending point of learning.
Adapted Madeline Hunter Lesson Plan Format

I will bring the lesson to a close by allowing students to come up to the front of the class to share one of
the text features they wrote on their notecard, or share what the main idea of their story was. This will
allow for students the opportunity to share their work with their peers, to learn about other informational
text that are shared, and allow for me to see based on what students share, if they met the learning
objective of the lesson.
