Fermentation Process:

The glucose consumption rate can be modeled using Luedeking-Piretlike equation that

neglects the amount of carbon substrate used for product formation. The model is expressed as

follows

S 1 X
ms X
t Y x t
s

where S is the substrate concentration (g/l), Yx is the yield coefficient for cell on
s

substrate, and ms is the maintenance energy coefficient (/h).

The above equation can be integrated which results the following expression:

X o X m e mt X o X m m s X m X o X o e mt
S So ln
Y x X m X 0 X o e mt Y x m Xm

s s

Where S o is the initial substrate concentration (g/l) and X o is the initial concentration (g/l)

Applying the logistic Equation to represent the microbial growth, the model can be written as:

X
m 1
Xm

X o X m e mt
X
X m X o X o e mt

Cell mass Balance:

X 1 X
X i X m 1 X
t R X m
Where

V
R
Q

Where R is the hydraulic retention time (h) , V is the fermenter volume (l) and Q is the

volumetric feed rate (l/h)

Since the feed is sterile X i 0 and the fermenter is at steady state condition the above

equation can be written as

1 X
m 1
R X m

Substrate Mass Balance:

S i S o RX ms
YX
s

Product mass Balance:

At steady state and no product in the input flow the above equation can be simplified as

follows

X
P RX m 1

Xm

where P is the product concentration (g/l), is the growth associated product formation

constant, is the non-growth associated product formation constant (/h).
