The present progressive

INTRODUCTION

The present progressive tense, indicates continuing action, something going on

now. This tense is formed with the helping "to be" verb, in the present tense, plus
the present participle of the verb (with an -ing ending). In this lesson you will learn
how to properly use the present progressive in English correctly.

III. Content Development

The Present Progressive

The present progressive is formed by combining the verb to be with the present
participle. The present participle is merely the -ing form of a ver.
The present progressive indicates continuing action, something going on now. The
present progressive can suggest that an action is going to happen in the future,
especially with verbs that convey the idea of a plan or of movement from one
place or condition to another.

1. I am studying.
2. I am studying with Maria.

In English, present progressive can be used to describe what is happening

now, or what will happen in the future.

3. I am studying now.

4. I am studying with Maria tonight.

Examples: (All of these sentences can be said while in conversation.)

I am studying to become a doctor.

I am not studying to become a dentist.

I am reading the book Tom Sawyer.

I am not reading any books right now.

Are you working on any special projects at work?

Aren't you teaching at the university now?

Examples: speakers use the Present Progressive to indicate that something will or
will not happen in the near future.

I am meeting some friends after work.

I am not going to the party tonight.

Is he visiting his parents next weekend?

Isn't he coming with us tonight?

Examples of the Present Progressive Tense

Caroline is looking for the latest brochure.

Dan and Billy are fishing off the pier.

You can also have a negative version:

Caroline is not looking for the latest brochure.

Dan and Billy are not fishing off the pier.

And, the Question versin:

Is Caroline looking for the latest brochure?

Are Dan and Billy fishing off the pier?

The present progressive tense can also be used to describe an activity which is
going to happen in the future (especially for planned activities). For example:

We are moving to New Zealand in the summer.

The train is arriving in 2 minutes.

NOTE: When the verb ends in e, drop the e before adding ing:

Example: take taking, make making, live living.

NOTE: When the verb ends in a consonant vowel consonant, double the final
consonant.

Example: plan planning, get getting, stop stopping.

NOTE: We dont use the present progressive with some verbs.

Example: like know want need.
