Lesson Plan of Endangered Species

Name: Keru Zheng(Koko)

Lab Instructor: Jade S Liggett

Lesson topic:

To remember (recite and write down) different reasons which caused some species in danger
according to the iMovie I did, such as African elephant, polar bear, the bonobo, loggerhead
sea turtle, etc.
The course theme is endangered species. The reasons are parts of important questions to
analyze this theme because students should know WHY first and then HOW. The purpose
for this class is to help students know more about some kinds of endangered species and the
main reasons cause them in danger like human beings battue, and help them understand how
to solve this problem and protect endangered species.
Indiana Standard(s):

www.doe.in.gov/standards
Standard 5(Biodiversity, Env 5.5) Identify the indirect and direct threats to biodiversity (e.g.
habitat loss and destruction, invasion by exotic species, commercial overfishing and hunting,
pollution, climate change, and bioaccumulation and biomagnification of toxins)
This standard is included in Environmental Science Resources and standard 5, Env 5.5, is
related to my theme, endangered species, that those contents can help me explain some
reasons which cause species in danger.
Target audience/students:

My target learners are elementary students about grade 1-3 and they always be interested in
animals and kids are full of sympathy so that my theme may be a good topic to touch their
feeling and to teach them how to protect environment and do not make harm to endangered
species. Moreover, animal topic is suitable for all background students.
My learners are young so that the topic should not be too difficult that including too much
generic term so that teacher should prepare for the more vivid description and interesting
lessons to teach students.
Use more technology tools to attract them and shorten the teachers narration and let
students do more discussion. For students who have disability: cannot hear: there are lots of
pictures and text with CC; cannot see: there are different kinds of animals description and
sounds can be offered to them.

Lesson objectives:

Students should know (write it down) the basic categories of endangered species and the
main reasons causing species in danger (like polluted environment, battue, land development)
in one piece of paper for 1 page as the homework after classes. Using textbooks and the
printouts, or slides offered by teachers before classes and finish quizzes in 20 minutes after
classes within 90% accuracy per week. The classes will divide into several chapters and more
information will be released every weekend on line. (there should have a blackboard for
students to use).

Learning environment:

In the classroom. Classrooms are easier for teacher to administrate young students and
students can listen to teachers instruction more clearly in a classroom. For students who will
be absent, there will have slides and screencasts for them shown on blackboard. For disabled
students, teachers will send e-mails to them for extra contents. Students can finish their
assignments in every environment but they should follow their instructors requests. (They
cant do the assignments together if this is an individual work.)

Materials needed for the lesson

1. Printed materials and textbooks for students to read before class. 2. Slides about the lesson
when a teacher is giving a lesson. (including lots of photo about the endangered species) 3.
Quiz paper / on-line text for students to do the evaluation. 4. On-line blackboard for on-line
assignments and announcements. 5. Students can bring their iPads or laptops to class if
needed.

Procedures

1. interaction. Students need to read their printouts and textbooks before class, and the teacher
needs to check students understanding of last class on line for 5 questions. Its good for the
correctness of 80% for each question.
2. Show a video to introduce todays situation about the endangered species and some pictures
about the typical endangered species. Let students enumerate other kinds of endangered
species and write it on the blackboard.
3. Show the slides of the lesson. (including the basic classification of the endangered species
with pictures and show the question: what things cause species to be in danger? The three
main topics are environment pollution, battue, and land development.)
4. Give 5 minutes in group discussion, and each groups representative write the reasons on the
blackboard.
5. Play a video on YouTube about the reasons why some species are in danger and the Powtoon
created by instructors.
6. Go over the solutions to reduce endangered species. (Q&A, and teachers should list what
students say on blackboard.)
7. Introduce the homework on on-line blackboard and send e-mails to every student.

Assessment

On-line quizzes twice a week; Test (write down basic classifications of the endangered species
and the solutions with 90% accuracy in 20 minutes). Tools: technologies (laptops, iPads, etc.), unified
answer sheet.
