Social Problems

- Refers to a problem that affects human relationships, threatens the continuation


of a civilized society or hinders significant aspirations of many people.
- Most social problems are collectively created by members of a given society;
therefore, solving them necessitates collective effort.
- Are problems of moral values; they are problems because the behaviour involved
in these breakdowns and deviation is widely regarded as immoral, illegal, or
potentially destructive to established institutions.

Forms of Deviant behaviour and Social Problems

1. DRUG ABUSE
- Drugs are chemicals that affect a person in such a way as to bring about
physiological, emotional, or behavioural change.

What is Drug abuse?


- Exist when a person continually uses a drug other than its intended purpose.
This continued use can lead to drug dependence or addiction.

Classification of Drugs

A. Sedatives (depressant drugs)


- These drugs that exert calming effects on the nervous system. They are
chemicals that relieve anxiety and induce them to sleep. (Tranquilizers, Alcohol)
B. Stimulants (uppers or PEP pills)
- These drugs increase the alertness and physical disposition of the individual.
They reduce hunger and provide a feeling of well-being. (Methamphetamines,
cocaine and caffeine)
C. Hallucinogens ( Psychedelic)
- Is a psychoactive agent which can cause hallucinations, perception anomalies,
and other substantial subjective changes in thoughts, emotions, and
consciousness. ( Marijuana and Mescaline)
D. Narcotics
- These are drugs that relieve pain and make one drowsy and relaxed. They are
taken by injection. (Heroine, Morphine)
Mostly Used Drugs are: Shabu, Marijuana, and Inhalants
Causes of Drug Abuse

A. Childhood trauma
B. Family history
C. Escape from reality
D. Self-medication
E. To feel high to get a thrilling experience or sensation
F. Peer pressure
G. Low self-esteem

2. CRIME
- Any person found guilty of violating laws or human rights may be penalized by
paying a fine, suffering imprisonment or capital punishment, or getting banned
from entering a particular place.
Misdemeanor is a crime of lesser degree that typically involves punishment
by paying fine, rendering community service or getting imprisoned for not more
than one year.
Felony is a serious crime such as killing, overthrowing the government,
destroying other peoples property, abusing minors, etc. in which in a grave
penalty is imposed ranging from more than a year of imprisonment to lifetime
imprisonment.
Classification of Crime

A. Crimes against person


- These crimes involve destruction of life or infliction injury to another person.
B. Crimes against property
- These crimes involve taking of another property or destroying other persons
property.
C. Crimes against chastity
- These crimes involve sexual infidelity, corruption of minors, and other abnormal
sexual behaviour.
D. Crimes against public morals
- These are considered as offensive to decency, public morals, and good customs.
E. Crimes against the state
- These crimes involve taking up arms against the government or committing an
act that threatens national security.
3. PROSTITUTION
- Is the act of submitting ones self in sexual relations in exchange for money or
other valuable.

Types of prostitution

Prostitutes in the Philippines may be classified as:


A. Streetwalkers
- These are prostitutes found in main avenues and boulevards of well known cities
of the Philippines.
B. Bar/Hotel Prostitutes
- These prostitutes are found in KTV bars, night clubs, videoke bars, massage
parlors, and hotel lobbies.
C. Escort services/Call girls/boys
- These prostitutes work on an outcall basis. Their calls are usually on locations
where there are rich and prominent clients who prefer the secrecy of a referral
service.
D. House or Brothel Prostitutes
- There are prostitutes who are legally allowed to practice their profession. They
are only found in the United States of America specifically in the states of
Nevada.

E. Other prostitutes (Beaches, Parks, Plazas)


- In the Philippines, other types of prostitutes are found in beaches, plazas, and
parks. These prostitutes work on their own and their primary target are foreigners
who are visiting historical sites and tourist spots.

Effects of Prostitution

1. Prostitution causes the spread of various diseases including HIV/AIDS.


2. Prostitution leads to moral degradation and deviation to the norms that
most communities protect and cherish.
3. Since prostitution promises high income, it takes away the initiative,
creativity, and perseverance of the people in searching for a decent
means of livelihood.
4. Prostitution promotes illicit sexual relationship and destroys marriage.
Alternative Solutions

To prevent Drug addictions, Crimes, and prostitutions; these measures can be


taken:
a. Strengthen family relationships. Parents should spend quality time with
their children.
b. Coordinate the efforts of the police and the community, and enhance
their cooperation.
c. Foster the relationship between the church and the family.
d. Weed out the misfits and scalawags in our law-enforcement agencies.
e. Restrict violent films and sex movies.
