SPECIFICATION FOR DACROMBT COATING 1) 2) SCOPE This specification defines the performance level (s) of a corrosion protective coating which is produced by dripping in an aqueous dispersion of zinc flakes, chromium salts and organic materials and stabilized by baking. The process is covered by the “Dacromet" trade name. APPLICATION The coatings are suitable for small ferrous components which can be bulk handled through cleaning, dip spinning and bake curing operation. Dip draining and bake curing operations may be used on parts which have to be treated individually. It is not suitable for parts which contact metals that are unfavourable to zinc, due to bi-mettallic corrosion, e.g. stainless steel, or parts which are adversely affected by baking temperatures of 330°C maximum. ‘The finish is suitable for high hardness components where embrittlement is likely to cause concern. Grade “A™ use on threaded & close mating components. Grade "B" use on general applications REQUIREMENTS Appearance The coating shall have a uniform metallic grey appearance free from tears and other discontinuities. Curing The coating shall be fully cured, as indicated by the appearance of a slight pale yellow colour when concentrated ammonium hydroxide (NH,OH) is dripped on to the surface of @ coated part and left*for 30 seconds at room temperature. SPECIFICATION FOR DACROMET COATING 3.5 Coating Weight and Thickness Grade "A" 20 to 24 g/m? 0,005-0,007mm Grade "B" 28 to 36 g/n? 0,008-0,010mm The coating thickness has been included for guidance only. Undersizing of threaded components are not permitted without prior approval of Engineering Standards for standard and utility parts, or the responsible Engineer for threaded production parts. The coating may be thicker at thread roots and in recesses, and thinner at crests and edges. Tightness to thread inspection ring gauges may be experienced, however, the coating thickness shall not adersly affect the mechanical performance of the part or have and adverse effect on normal installation and removal practices. Unless otherwise agreed by Quality Engineering or stated on the part drawing, the coating shall be applied in two or more dip, spin and bake operations, to ensure uniformity of thickness and freedom from tears and other discontinuities. Corrosion Finished components shall be tested in accordance with ASTM BI17, BS 5466 Part 1. After the specified test time, without using gupplementary magnification, one red rust spot per 1600mm° of significant surface area is acceptable provided the spot is no greater than 1.5mm in diameter. Salt Spray Resistance Grade "A* 240 hours min Grade "B* 400 hours min : METRO-CAMMELL WEYMANN SECTION NO. + MCWS 001/16 ISSUE NO. r2 DRAUGHTING STANDARDS PAGE NO. 1 02 No. OF PAGES : 3 OF 3 DATE + MARCH 1987 This sheet may only be altered by MCW Engineering Department. z 3.6 Adhesive : The coating shall withstand normal handling storage and installation without flaking or peeling or other loss of adhesion. 3.7 Cleaning Prior to coating, the parts shall be free from oil, scale and similar foreign materials. ‘The cleaning process shall have no detrimental effect on the substrate (including freedom from embrittlement).
