Unit Plan Outline:

Lesson 1:
Lesson one is the introductory lesson to the unit. During this lesson, students will be
introduced to the concept of a Habitat. Students will be introduced to this concept by first
focusing on the concept of survival. As a class, students will discuss what we, as humans, need
to survive, and how we get those things. Students will then discuss how our needs are similar
and differ from the needs of plants and animals, and they will discuss how the environment will
play a role in the survival of plants and animals. Students will be taught that a habitat provides
these needs for you. Students will briefly be introduced to some of the vocabulary terms that
will be studied throughout the unit. These vocabulary words will be worked with later in the
unit. This lesson will teach students the various types of habitats that will be studied
throughout the unit: Rainforest, Grassland, Ocean, Desert, and Polar Region. This lesson will
include a read-aloud book, note-taking, and students will be assessed with an exit ticket at the
end of the lesson.

*Lessons 2 & 3 are full lessons with lesson plans that can be found on the Rainforest and
Ocean pages *

Lesson 4:
In this lesson, students will do a vocabulary scavenger hunt. After the vocabulary
scavenger hunt, students will be introduced to their first project of the unit. This unit will
contain two major projects: a group presentation and a habitats diorama. This lesson will be
used to outline the guidelines for the group presentations. During this lesson, students will be
given the option of picking from a list of habitats to study (desert, grassland, and polar regions).
Students will receive the rubric for the presentation, and it will be discussed in class, so
students know what is expected of them. There will be three groups (1 per habitat). After
groups are arranged, students will be given their research packets. These packets will be used
each time students are given time to do research for their projects. The packets will contain
questions that must be answered about each habitat. Students will then have to create a
PowerPoints presentation, Prezi, or Google Slides presentation on their habitat. During
research time, students will have the opportunity to meet with their groups and work on their
presentation. Students will be using their Chromebooks, textbooks, and books from the library
to do their research. This lesson will carry over into a few days, allowing students a lot of time
to work on their research, their presentations, and utilize the technology in the classroom.
Students will be informally assessed while working collaboratively in their groups collecting
research on their habitats.

Lesson 5:
During this lesson students will be presenting their group presentation on their chosen
habitat. Each group will be assessed based on their presentation. After presentations are
complete, students will receive the guidelines for their final project of the unit. The final project
of the unit is the Create your own habitat diorama. Students will review the important
aspects of a habitat, and keep these aspects in mind when creating their own habitats. In this
lesson, students will be taking a vocabulary quiz on google forms.

Lesson 6:
This is the last lesson of the unit. During this lesson, students will present their dioramas
and create your own habitats projects. Students will be assessed based on their presentations,
and based on a teacher-created Rubric. During this lesson, parents are invited into the
classroom to watch presentations. This unit will then be wrapped up and will end.
