Unit 4 Paper
The idea of Play is often disregarded due to the lack of seriousness it entails. However,
many fail to recognize the benefits play contributes to ones overall growth and development.
Play is often associated with laughter and humor, in which laughter can play a major role in
reducing stress (Pink, 2005, p 204) and humor embodies many of the right hemispheres most
powerful attributes --- the ability to place situations in context, to glimpse the big picture, and to
combine differing perspectives into new alignments (Pink, 2005, p 198). With that said, the 21st
century art education approach including both choice-based and learner-directed approaches
ultimately assist with incorporating the idea of play into the classroom. Both of these approaches
help the student direct their pathway of education and provides them with the opportunity to
grow through opportunities to connect students work to their unique lives (Douglas and
Jaquith, 2009, p 19). Overall, the incorporation of these education approaches and play in art
help to reduce stress in the classroom and provide the student with the power to have control
over their projects while providing them with a variety of different perspectives.
In an art therapy setting, I would modify the content learned in this unit in order to best
serve my patients mental and emotional needs by having my patients make a self portrait by
creating a mask using play. I would set out a variety of different art supplies used in art and
would allow my patients to choose any of the supplies they wish to make their mask with. I
would encourage my patients to go about a less serious approach in creating their mask in order

to incoprorate play. The mask will ultimately encompass their interpretation of their own
personal identity and after creating their mask, we can discuss with one another how the mask
reflects their identity and why they chose to create the mask in a certain manner.
