Representatives of the Media; Colleagues and Dear
Graduands.
It is a great privilege and honour to welcome you all to the
sixth Convocation of The IIS University. Ladies and
Gentlemen, the graduation ceremony is the most
significant occasion in the University's calendar. It
represents the culmination of years of burning of the midnight oil in order to attain
the proverbial Golden Fleece. So, today we are here not only to reflect on this long
journey of academic and social preparations, but also to celebrate the grit,
perseverance, and triumph of our graduands. We toast their new beginnings as the
custodians of our nation's youth and future. But most importantly we appreciate
and acknowledge the role played by their teachers, parents, families and friends, as
this achievement is one that is seldom managed without the support of those
nearest to us.
And amidst all this cheer and festivity, I have the honour of welcoming and
introducing a man of rare qualities who has exhibited a kaleidoscopic picture of all
the facets of leadership. As a firebrand, courageous and much decorated chief of
the 2nd largest standing army in the world the Indian army, he personified military
commandments of duty, honour & country. And now as a true representative of
the people of the world's largest democracy, he is a champion of fair dealings and
transparency; he displays an unwavering commitment to democracy, rule of law
and ethical values in public life. His pivotal role in operation Raahat and his
wholehearted involvement in Hon'ble Prime Minister's philanthropic project

contd......
'Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana' brings to fore his brilliant leadership, his appreciation
of true justice and his selfless dedication to the pursuit of restoring human dignity to
the oppressed. It is truly said visionaries never go out of style!
Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in welcoming General V. K. Singh. His oratory
is eloquence, his brilliance is mesmerizing. I am sure the Convocation Address to
be delivered by such an illustrious personality, will inspire our young bright
graduates to achieve excellence in their chosen fields.
Ladies and Gentlemen, We are now into the third decade of our National presence
as a much sought after Institute of Higher Learning. As I look back on our journey of
last twenty years, I realize that while each one of us is a part of history in making, the
present owes much to the past. The IIS University was started with the holistic
vision- the vision of creating a center of academic and extra-curricular
achievements for the youth. Our pedagogy, while recognizing the significance of
technology, is mindful of the fact that modernization need not be dichotomous with
our tradition and culture.
The journey began in 1995 as the International College for Girls and within a short
span of time crossed many significant milestones in its endeavours towards
excellence in higher education. It was conferred the status of Deemed to be
University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2009.
While the institution has grown in terms of size, reputation and impact, we remain
true to our values of social inclusion with a strong sense of place and civic
responsibility. A review committee constituted by the MHRD has also re-affirmed
our commitment to delivering quality education by placing the IISU among the top
38 deemed to be universities of the country under category A. We have also been
granted 12B status by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. We have been
successfully reviewed for our Deemed to be University status by a peer team from
University Grants Commission last year. The institution has also been granted the
membership of 'The Association of Commonwealth Universities', UK which is the
world's first and oldest international university network.
These achievements are not a result of one year's performance alone. They are a
testimony to the institution's inherent strength accumulated over the years. To this,
each member of the IISU community, including its alumnae, has contributed
immensely. They all deserve to be congratulated.

contd......
The University strives to maintain its cosmopolitan and pluralistic tradition by
enrolling young scholars and Faculty from varied communities and socio-
economic backgrounds. We believe our diversity is a source of strength that
underpins the exchange of ideas, innovation and debate at the heart of our
academic mission. The student enrollment during the past year has risen to over
5000. There is also a corresponding expansion in the strength of the permanent
staff, with more than 80 percent holding a Ph.D. degree.
Of all its core values, the University has remained truest to its first i.e. the academic
rigour. The University emphasizing the Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences,
Commerce, Management and IT offers a unique combination of resources in a
space that provides unusual intellectual and cultural opportunities and a context of
learning that enhances professionalism, humanism and social responsibility. The
education system followed here has a clear interface with the society in all its
endeavours. This is abundantly brought out by the kind of academic research that is
pursued here as well as the co-curricular activities undertaken.
The University has adopted a proactive approach towards building its portfolio of
academic partnerships through the development of sustainable and mutually
beneficial alliances with highly regarded organizations that share common aims
and interests. These partnerships have benefited our faculty and students alike, and
have extended and enhanced our national and global reach and reputation. In the
current academic session, the university has inked five MOUs. The two significant
ones are with the Institute of Management Accountants, USA and Confederation of
Indian Industries.
Research is the foundation of all that we do here at the IIS University. As part of our
commitment to strengthening our already impressive research-base, we have
established a Centre for Research, Innovation and Training, instituted research
fellowships across disciplines and launched a research development fund.
In order to add a voice to the intellectual dialogue both within the University
community and in broader academia, the University has taken the initiative to
publish peer reviewed journals in all the faculties which include original,
multidisciplinary articles.
After the grant of Deemed University status we have started Research Programmes
in all the faculties. We can boast of the commendable performance of our faculty
members, particularly of their quality research output, which has evinced many

contd......
publications in various peer-reviewed national and international journals as well as
conference proceedings, books, monographs etc. Their research has been widely
published and referenced, both locally and internationally. For the academic
session 2017-18, at the end of the odd semester, the number of research
publications by our faculty and students stands at over 100 research articles in
national and international refereed journals and around 150 presentations in
national and international level conferences organized in India and abroad.
The University calendar reserves special slots for organizing workshops, seminars
and conferences by the different departments of the University throughout the
academic year. It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all that the
University had the privilege of hosting the 70th All India Annual Conference of Indian
Commerce Association in the month of October. This mega event saw a
congregation of over 2500 delegates from India and abroad. It set new
benchmarks, not only, in the quality of research and academic deliberations,
discourses and presentations but also in the arrangements and hospitality provided
to the participants!
Besides teaching and research, the University continues to initiate academic
activities pertaining to new and frontier technology areas of societal importance by
actively engaging faculty from all departments in consultancy services for external
organizations. Our faculty members also provide academic leadership through their
inputs as external members on various statutory bodies and editorial boards of
organizations of national repute.
The academic excellence and breadth of curricula at the University help to mould
professionals and provide a perfect springboard for their entry into the work arena.
We are extremely pleased to announce that in the current year, an impressive
number of our students have been successfully placed, by our very active
counselling and placement cell, in several prestigious industries and organizations.
Besides this the University has also been able to achieve substantial results in
creating successful and innovative entrepreneurs.
University's Center for Civil Services and other Preparatory Classes has been
grooming students for different state and national level examinations. A lot of our
students enrolled in these classes have successfully cleared NET, SET and other
competitive examinations. It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all that,
this year, 03 of our alumnae Zehla Sherwani, Kiran Bala, and Nausheen Quasar have

contd......
cleared Combined Defense Services Examination; another student Heeral Mehta
has cleared Combined Graduate Level Examination conducted by Staff Selection
Commission. And the cherry on the cake goes to Padmini Solanki an alumna of
Batch of 2009 who has cleared the IAS Exam securing 117th position in the merit
list.
Today is a proud day for this University. Over 1700 students are being conferred
their degrees and diplomas in the various programmes out of which there are 38
Ph.D., 02 M.Phil.,513 Post graduation, 1150 Under graduation & 39 Advanced
Diploma level graduands. I am privileged to state that 59 Gold Medals and Plaques,
16 Endowment Awards and 281 Merit Certificates are being awarded to meritorious
graduands. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all of them.
You, dear graduands, are among the most talented in our society. It is to you that we
look to lead, to re-imagine and reshape our future and to ensure that reason, people,
and social justice are at the heart of all your conduct and actions.
This morning my only message to you all is have faith in your dreams. There is
inside you, all of the potential to be whatever you want to be and to do whatever you
want to do. Remember, you are the heroes and history makers, the glass ceiling
breakers of the future.
It is said that girls with dreams become women with vision! But for that vision to
become a reality, it is important that women have a seat at the table. And if it is not
available to you, as it may happen very often, reset the table! Because it is not
enough to talk about equality, you will have to work at it. Empower yourself,
empower each other! I firmly believe that equality, especially women's equality is
not just a moral issue, it's not just a humanitarian issue, it is not just a fairness issue,
it is a security issue, it is a prosperity issue, and it is a peace issue.
So, always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. And,
when you stumble, keep faith. And, when you are knocked down, get right back up.
Never listen to anyone who says you cannot or should not go on. Despite all the
challenges you may face, I for one, remain convinced that yes, the future is female!
Today, I hope that you leave this campus with a deep reservoir of the IISU spirit of
inclusion, diversity and equality, a reservoir that will grow over the years. I hope that
this spirit inspires you to make your contributions to the world, and that it brings you
back often to this special place.

contd......
Once you receive your degree or diploma, you become part of the community of Old
IISUites. I welcome you to this ever-growing and diverse network, and I invite you to
join BANDHAN- the association of the alumnae of this University so that you can
stay connected with your alma mater.
I wish you success in all your endeavours. As you enter the world of work and life
generally, it will be worth reflecting on these lines:

To create a newer world

To translate the future into the past,
We have no need of false revolutions.

In a world where categories tend to tyrannize our minds

And hang our wills up on narrow pegs,
It is well to seek the limits in our lives.

And once those limits are understood

To understand that limitations no longer exist.

Earth could be fair. And you and I must be free

Not to save the world in a glorious crusade
But to practice with all the skill of our being
The art of making possible!

Thank You & Good Luck

You can recall that your
mission for higher learning General(Dr.) V.K. Singh
began here with great fervor, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd.)
but know for sure that it will Minister of State for External Affairs, Govt. of India
not end here.

It is a great pleasure and honour to address the 6th

Convocation of The IIS University, Jaipur. I am
thankful to the management of this University for
inviting me on this coveted occasion. This University
has distinguished itself as a pre-eminent institution in
the state of Rajasthan in the field of women education.
It is your hard work, devotion to quality, dedication of
your faculty and vision of your management, which is
responsible for this distinguished achievement. It
gives me great pleasure to acknowledge the dynamic
leadership of its Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashok Gupta and the members of
Management Committee.
My dear young graduates,
Today marks an important day in your lives and a significant milestone in your life's
journey. Entering into this institution with hopes of a bright future, you pursued your
academic work with great dedication. By your hard work and enthusiasm to strive
for high standards, you have earned your degrees. It is a matter of pride for you as
much as it is for your teachers, parents and mentors who have shaped your life till
this significant moment. You can recall that your mission for higher learning began
here with great fervor, but know for sure that it will not end here. Your quest for
excellence will not end until you feel fully capable of meeting the challenges of the
life with confidence and acquiring a positive attitude to deal with successes and
failures. From now onwards you will be on your own, armed with what you have
learnt to face the challenges of life.
I am sure that each one of you has dreams for your future. I would advise you to hold
on to them, as it is your dreams and aspirations that will guide you to achieve the
pinnacle of success and make your life purposeful. If you are prepared to think big
and act with conviction, the world will be yours.

contd......
Now, having achieved a major milestone in your life as graduates, you stand at
crossroads, where you can choose to either pursue higher studies or to compete
for job related entrance exams, or be an entrepreneur. The choices for embracing a
career may also include information technology, Industry, education, R&D or
management and administrative services. However, you should choose a career
where you derive your true satisfaction and job fulfillment.
As you enter your work life there are several challenges waiting to be overcome.
Even as the Indian economy is growing at a significant rate, it is a big challenge to
sustain this economic growth in a manner that does not adversely affect our natural
assets. The need of the hour is to create and sustain the knowledge wealth and its
effective utilization in the country's development.
My dear young friends, you are the future of this nation and custodians of our rich
traditions which blend antiquity with modernization. As we march towards
progressive development, your role becomes more central to our society, having
become contributing members to its growth. As Gandhiji once said, You are the
hope of the future. You will be called upon, when you are discharged from your
colleges, to enter upon public life to lead the poor people of this country. I would,
therefore, like you all to have a sense of responsibility and show it in a much tangible
manner. Today, I am filled with a hope and a strong belief in India's bright future.
The achievements of the Indian youth have given India a place of pride in the
scientific and technological world. It is on this unique strength that we are today on
the IT super highway. The challenges today are many, but in building a new India,
the youth has a very proactive role and is a major player - a big stakeholder.
Therefore, if the targets of eradication of poverty, health, education, and a higher
level of life standards are to be achieved, it is only through the power of youth, which
must rise to the challenge. I have full confidence, that all of you will become
responsible citizens of the nation and strive hard not only to achieve your goals but
also to make this country a better place.
Globalization has helped Indian industry to become competitive in the market
beyond Indian Territory and win major contracts abroad. This experience of
industry has helped even the domestic products and projects, as many of the Indian
entrepreneurs have not remained bound to the national frontiers but have expanded
their horizons to cater to the world. Hence the development of skills and
entrepreneurship among the youth becomes significant.

contd......
When I look at the youth, I can see great hope. The answer lies within each of you
who stand committed to changing the face of the nation with your wise decisions
and conscientious efforts. You, at the threshold of a career and a life, are capable of
making those civic decisions that will lead the nation to a higher level of
development. All of us here feel that you can change the face of this country and that
is the requirement of the day.
So when I see you, the graduate students, my message to you is to build a strong
self that willingly serves people. But before that serve yourself, in order to serve
everybody. So work hard towards your goal there is no substitute for hard work.
Look beyond your personal interest and create hope.
The 21st century is a phenomenal era for women empowerment, as we see women
holding key positions in the higher echelons of our society. Their participation in the
decision-making process has led to socio-economic development. Empowering
women acts as a potential which accelerates the economic growth and continue
development of the nation. Having said that, we can see the dichotomy that on the
one hand they are masters in their domain, yet there are social, cultural constraints
on them which act as the main deterrent to gender equality.
Hence these social, cultural and political norms need to be understood, for which we
first need to address all the social inequalities that hinder women's advancement in
order to change the situation of women in the society and nation. I would like to
encourage all male members to discuss this issue in their family and community to
explore all the restrictions faced by women in their advancements and encourage
their women-folk to come forward and shoulder responsibilities in the public
domain. This has to begin from the family, and encouragement from men will enable
them to march confidently in different domains of life. Men and women need to
engage in all social and cultural norms equally to encourage combined participation
as well as create equitable environment in homes, offices and community. Thus, it is
time to break the barriers and trust the potential of women which will change the face
of the country.
The contribution of women in the field of defense is also noteworthy. Whereas such
a position was rarely upheld in our nation's past, we have come a long way to their
acceptance in this field, with the present Prime Minister definitely inclined towards a
wider representation of women in the military. Finally, I would like to remind you that,
you are among the few fortunate who have had access to educational experience at

contd......
this renowned university. This experience will reward and guide you throughout your
life. You are already aware of the realities of rigorous competition and have acquired
the capacity to take advantage of the competitive environment. I hope that while you
may use this capacity to create wealth and welfare for yourself and for the
organizations you will work for, it is also your moral duty to strive for welfare of
community, society, for reducing disparity therein and to empower the
disadvantaged.
An institution like IIS University which educates and grooms young women to go
forth and become an asset to Bharat is the need of the hour. Quality education
combined with high self esteem and strong moral values inculcated in all of you has
equipped you to stand tall and speak up not only for yourselves but for the under
privileged, for what is right and for what is true.
I once again congratulate you and wish you a bright and rewarding future in whatever
career you choose. You are bound to succeed and prosper, for you are among the
brightest and the best of our land. In all that lies before you, may God grant you
wisdom, success and true sense of fulfillment of your cherished ideals and goals.
I would like to close my address with a quote from former honourable president
Dr. Kalam's address.

When you wish upon a star,

Makes no difference who you are,
Anything your heart desires,
Will come to you?

Justice S.N. Bhargava, Hon'ble Chancellor, The IIS University; Chief

Guest General V.K. Singh, Hon'ble Minister of State for External
affairs, Government of India; Dr. Ashok Gupta, Hon'ble Vice-
Chancellor, The IIS University; Members of the Board of
Management and Academic Council; Distinguished Guests and
other Dignitaries; Dear Graduates and their Family and Friends in the

the honour and privilege to propose a formal vote of thanks and

my deepest gratitude to you all.
I begin by extending our hear tiest thanks to the Chief Guest of the event General V. K.
Singh, for his benign presence and words of wisdom. We are indeed grateful to you Sir,
both for sparing time out of your busy schedule to join us on this proud occasion and
also for so very kindly acceding to our request to deliver the Convocation Address. Your
stimulating thoughts and impressive articulation stand testimony to the breadth of your
scholarship. Today, in this hall, I know you have managed to influence and inspire each
one of us. Your presence, sir, has not only added grace to the occasion but has also
boosted our morale tremendously. In fact, your being here today with us at this solemn
occasion speaks volumes of your commitment to the cause of higher education.
This day would have been meaningless without the presence of our successful
graduates. You have toiled hard and richly deserve the degrees and certificates you have
received. On behalf of the IIS University, I congratulate each one of you and wish you
well in all your future endeavours. Tomorrow, the life you will author on your own begins
from scratch. Peddle on... and remember, along your journey, be passionate and focus
on reaching your destination, treat everyone and everything with humanity and
compassion, and underpin your decisions with the values. Most of all do not forget to
occasionally stop, look back, wave and say hello to the ones that have shown you the
way. Your future is in your hands. Take this opportunity to make a difference.
Margret Mead had once famously said Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has!
Today, on this historical occasion, I would like to extend a huge Thank You to one such
group- the parents, families, friends and mentors of our graduates. Thank you for

contd......
reposing faith in us and choosing us for grooming your wards for higher calling in life, thank
you for all your sacrifices to give these graduates one of life's greatest game-changers:
university education, thank you for the support you gave them throughout their studies,
thank you for being here with us to share these moments with us,! It is the happiness in
your eyes that actually makes us feel proud. It reaffirms the faith in what we are doing
towards society. Your presence has made all the difference to this function. While we are all
very proud to celebrate the results of our graduates' achievements, their achievements are
yours too, for at the end of the day the most overwhelming key to a student's success is
the positive involvement of parents. We are thus very pleased and proud to share and
celebrate this day with you.
An event of this stature does not materialize overnight. The wheels have to start rolling
months in advance. It requires meticulous planning and execution, with an eye for detail. I
would, therefore, like to convey my sincere thanks to Justice S.N. Bhargava, Hon'ble
Chancellor and Dr. Ashok Gupta, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, The IIS University, for their
constant support and timely guidance which has ensured the success of today's
Convocation ceremony.
We are also grateful to all the external members of the various statutory bodies of the
University who are here with us today on this occasion to show their solidarity with our
ideology and ethos.
I extend my sincere gratitude to Prof. K.S. Sharma, Advisor, Prof. N.K. Jain, Dean, Faculty of
Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. M.K. Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and
Management, Prof. PradeepBhatnagar, Dean, Faculty of Science, and Prof. SubhashGarg,
Director, Centre for Research, Innovation and Training, The IIS University, for their valuable
inputs and involvement at every step of planning and execution of this function.
May I put on record my acknowledgement of the collective efforts of all the faculty
members, the student-volunteers and the technical and support staff, who have
ceaselessly worked towards making this event a reality!
I also thank the media persons for evincing such interest in covering this ceremony. I would
like to end with these lines for our Dear Graduates:
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That cannot be done, and you'll do it.

Thank You and God Bless!
