Writing: 2.12 The student will write stories.
in PK-12

b) Organize writing to include a beginning, middle, and end for narrative
and
expository writing.
Idea #1:
Students will utilize Debategraph to make a bubble graph of their ideas for
an original story authored by the student. The main idea will be typed into
Map Title followed by issue additions chronicling the beginning, middle,
and end for the narrative. Other issue additions may be made to develop
character names, traits, etc. The claims function can be used to justify
points of the story. Students are to use the rollover section to further
detail their thoughts.

The teacher could use Debategraph as a collaborative tool. Students would
be arranged in small groups to analyze the same fictional text. Each
student in the group would use Debategraph to generate a map that had
issues such as text-to-world and text-to-self connections. A bubble could
be added entitled character development. Each student in the group would
add their own thoughts individually but the group could view it and rate
each idea. Other bubbles will be added to show plot development, conflict
resolution, vocabulary, points of view, main idea, summaries and cause and
effect relationships. Once the collaboration has been completed with all
opinions mapped, the group would then meet face to face to pare down
the ideas for an oral presentation about the book to the class.

students to share ideas outside of the classroom.
4. The color-coded spheres and roll-over options give clarity to the
students ideas.
5. Help tools are readily available on the same screen.
6. Videos and images can be embedded.
Negatives:
1. The terminology used in the application is quite sophisticated and
may be too complex for younger users.
2. Although there is a private/public function, it is concerning that the
student-user may not always remember to select the appropriate
setting.
3. By using the rating system, students could feel intimidated that their
ideas may not be the most favored ones.
